AlthoughtherearenostatecontrolledsurvivalcoursesinBritainortheUnitedStates,therearevariousindependentorganizationsofferingsimilaractivities.
Studentscanparticipate（takepart）inoutdoortrainingcoursesthroughuniversityclubsandsocieties.Anyonecanregister（登记）withsuchgroups,whichthenorganizecourses,trainingandtripsforallmembers.
OneofthemostpopularoutdoortrainingprogrammesinboththeUSandBritain,isOutwardBound（户外训练）.Itwasfoundedin1941inWalesandattractshundredsofthousandsofadventuroustypeseveryyear.
Thecoursesaretobroadenmindsthroughexperiencesthatbuildconfidence,self-esteem（自尊）andcharacter.Aswellasspecialistcoursessuchascanoeing,leadershipskillsandsailing,participantscantakepartinweeklongadventuretrainingcampswhichincludeahostofsportsandsurvivaltrainingeducationskills.
MichaelWilliams,anAmericanstudent,tookpartinanOutwardBoundcourselastyear.Hesaid:
“Welearnedlotsoffirstaidskills,lotsofnaturalhistory,lotsofenvironmentalfacts,andparticipatedinawildlifepreservation（protecting）programme.Beyondthat,myfavoriteskillslearnedweresailingandrockclimbing.”
