而融化后的冰川，将使海平面快速上升，世界很多美丽的城市终将被海水所淹没。

　　Thetemperatureoftheatmosphereneartheearth'ssurfaceiswarmedthroughanaturalprocesscalledthegreenhouseeffect.Visible,shortwavelightxxesfromthesuntotheearth,passingunimpededthroughablanketofthermal,orgreenhouse,gasesxxposedlargelyofwatervapor,carbondioxide,methane,nitrousoxide,andozone.Infraredradiationreflectsofftheplanet'ssurfacetowardspacebutdoesnoteasilypassthroughthethermalblanket.Someofitistrappedandreflecteddownward,keepingtheplanetatanaveragetemperaturesuitabletolife,about60°F（16°C）.

　　Growthinindustry,agriculture,andtransportationsincetheIndustrial

　　Revolutionhasproducedadditionalquantitiesofthenaturalgreenhousegasespluschlorofluorocarbonsandothergases,augmentingthethermalblanket.Itisgenerallyacceptedthatthisincreaseinthequantityofgreenhousegasesistrappingmoreheatandincreasingglobaltemperatures,makingaprocessthathasbeenbeneficialtolifepotentiallydisruptiveandharmful.Duringthepastcentury,theatmospherictemperaturehasrisen°F（°C）,andsealevelhasrisenseveralinches.Someprojected,longer-termresultsofglobalwarmingincludemeltingofpolarice,witharesultingriseinsealevelandcoastalflooding;disruptionofdrinkingwatersuppliesdependentonsnowmelts;profoundchangesinagricultureduetoclimatechange;extinctionofspeciesasecologicalnichesdisappear;morefrequenttropicalstorms;andanincreasedincidenceoftropicaldiseases.

　　Amongfactorsthatmaybecontributingtoglobalwarmingaretheburningofcoalandpetroleumproducts（sourcesofcarbondioxide,methane,nitrousoxide,ozone）;deforestation,whichincreasestheamountofcarbondioxideintheatmosphere;methanegasreleasedinanimalwaste;andincreasedcattleproduction,whichcontributestodeforestation,methaneproduction,anduseoffossilfuels.

　　Muchofthedebatesurroundingglobalwarminghascenteredontheaccuracyofscientificpredictionsconcerningfuturewarming.Topredictglobalclimatictrends,climatologistsaccumulatelargehistoricaldatabasesandusethemtocreatexxputerizedmodelsthatsimulatetheearth'sclimate.Thevalidityofthesemodelshasbeenasubjectofcontroversy.Skepticssaythattheclimateistooxxplicatedtobeaccuratelymodeled,andthattherearetoomanyunknowns.Somealsoquestionwhethertheobservedclimatechangesmightsimplyrepresentnormalfluctuationsinglobaltemperature.Nonetheless,forsometimetherehasbeengeneralagreementthatatleastpartoftheobserved

　　warmingistheresultofhumanactivity,andthattheproblemneedstobeaddressed.In1992,attheUnitedNationsConferenceonEnvironmentandDevelopment,over150nationssignedabindingdeclarationontheneedtoreduceglobalwarming.

　　In1994,however,aUNscientificadvisorypanel,theIntergovernmentalPanelonClimateChange,concludedthatreductionsbeyondthoseenvisionedbythetreatywouldbeneededtoavoidglobalwarming.Thefollowingyear,theadvisorypanelforecastariseinglobaltemperatureoffromto°F（–°C）by2100ifnoactionistakentocutdownontheproductionofgreenhousegases,andariseoffrom1to°F（–2°C）evenifactionistaken（becauseofalreadyreleasedgasesthatwillpersistintheatmosphere）.

　　AUNConferenceonClimateChange,heldinKyoto,Japan,in1997resultedinaninternationalagreementtofightglobalwarming,whichcalledfor

　　reductionsinemissionsofgreenhousegasesbyindustrializednations.Notallindustrialcountries,however,immediatelysignedorratifiedtheaccord.In20XXtheG.W.BushadministrationannounceditwouldabandontheKyotoProtocol;becausetheUnitedStatesproducesaboutonequarteroftheworld'sgreenhousegases,thiswasregardedasasevereblowtotheefforttoslowglobalwarming.DespitetheAmericanmove,mostothernationsagreedlaterintheyear（inBonn,Germany,andinMarrakech,Morocco）onthedetailsnecessarytoconverttheagreementintoabindinginternationaltreaty,whichcameintoforcein20XXaft
