Theauthorsalsofoundthatprodigiesscoredhighinautistic(自闭症的)features,especiallyintheirextremeattentiontodetails.Theyscoredevenhigheronthisfeaturethanpeoplediagnosed(诊断)withAsperger'ssyndrome,ahigh-functioningformofautism(自闭症)thattypicallyincludesgreatenthusiasmaboutdetails.
Threeoftheeightprodigieshadadiagnosedautismdisorder.Fouroftheeightfamiliesincludedinthestudyreportedautismdiagnosesinfirst-or-second-degreerelatives,andthreeofthesefamiliesreportedatotalof11closerelativeswithautism.Inthegeneralpopulation,incomparison,about1in88peoplehaveeitherautismorAsperger's.
Otherunusualsimilaritiesbetweenprodigiesandthosewithautism:
they'rebothmorelikelytobemaleandbothareassociatedwithdifficultpregnancies,suggestingthatwhattheyhadgonethroughbeforetheywerebornmayplayaroleintheirdevelopment.
Yet,verylittleresearchhasbeendoneontheconnectionbetweenautismandextremetalent.Asamatteroffact,prodigiesappeartobenefitfromcertainautistictendencies.Inotherwords,thesechildrenmayhavesomegeneticfeatureorlearnedskillthatallowsthemtomaintainintensefocus,withoutdamagingtheirsocialskillsorsufferingfromotherdisabilitiesthattypicallyaccompanyautismdisorders.Comparingthesechildrenwiththosewhohaveautismcouldthereforepotentiallyhelpexplainwhatgoeswronginthosewhodevelopdisablingformsofautismandwhatgoesrightinotherswithsimilarfeatureswhosimplybenefitfromtheconditionandareabletoimprovetheirabilities.
