“Mauka,maukakaua,Makai,makaikaua.”SosingthechildrenatakindergartenontheIslandofHawaii.Thesongismuchlike“Rain,rain,goaway”nurseryrhyme,butithasanunusualpower:

ThedeclineofHawaiianwasnot,asisthecasewithmostdisappearinglanguages,anaturaldeathcausedbymigration（迁徙）andmassmedia.In1896,afterAmericanbusinessinterestsendedtheHawaiianoriginalpoliticalsystem,schoolswerebannedfromusingit.Bythelate20thcentury,apartfromacoupleofhundredpeopleononetinyisland,EnglishhadreplacedHawaiianandonlytheoldspokeittoeachother.
Thecivil-rightsmovementbroughtarevivalofinterestamongtheyoung,centredontheUniversityofHawaiiatHilo.LarryKimura,aprofessorthere,wasnotsatisfiedthatthelanguageshouldbeonlyasubjectatcollege:
heandhisstudentswantedtobringitbacktolife.TheideaforhowtodothatcamefromavisitingMaori,whosuggested“languagenests”,whichhadsuccessfullyrevivedNewZealand’snativelanguage.
In1985,wheneducatingchildreninHawaiianwasstillbanned,KauanoeKamanaandherhusbandPilaWilson,bothstudentsofKimura’s,createdthefirst“languagenest”atHilo.Neitherwasanativespeaker,butbothweredeterminedtobringuptheirchildrenassuch.Theygatheredasmallgroupofchildren,includingtheirownsonanddaughter,andelderlynativespeakers.
Themovementgrew:
