Inonestudy,researcherscomparedhealth,behavior,sleepcomplaintsandschoolperformanceofnormalandpoorsleepers.“Twenty-onepercentofpoorsleepersfailedoneormoreyearsatschool,whilesimilarproblemswereobservedinjust11%ofnormalsleepers.Moreover,schoolachievementdifficultiesresultedmorefrequentlyinpoorthaninnormalsleepers.Oneofthebestpredictorsforthislowschoolachievementhasbeenidentifiedinchildren’sfatigue,”saidProfessorCurcioa.

Astudyof3,000highschoolstudentsin1998showedthatstudentswithhighergradesreportedmoretotalsleep,earlierbedtimeonschoolnightsandlessirregularsleeppatternsatweekendsthanstudentswithlowergrades.

Anotherstudyinvestigatedtheeffectsoftotalsleepdeprivationonstudentsinalaboratory.After18hoursmovementandresponsetimesslowed;at34hoursendurancedropped;at42hoursagility,balanceandpowerweresignificantlyweakened;at50hoursspeedwasaffected.

Theresearchersconcludedwhatteenagershaveprobablyknownunconsciouslyforyears.“Sleeplossisfrequentlyassociatedwithpoordeclarativeandprocedurallearninginstudents.Studiesinwhichsleepwasactivelyrestrictedoroptimized(使最优化)showed,respectively,aworseningoranimprovementinneurocognitiveandacademicperformance.Theseresultsmayhavebeenrelatedtothespecificinvolvementoftheprefrontalcortex(PFC)(前额皮层)invulnerabilitytosleeploss.”ThePFCisthebrainregionthatplanscomplexcognitiveactions,expressespersonalityandmakessureapersonbehavesappropriatelyinsocialsituations.
