Thefirstpartof“DemocracyinAmerica”waswrittenin1831-32andpublishedin1835.AhighlypositiveandoptimisticaccountofAmericangovernmentandsociety,thebookwasverywellreceived.HeattemptedtogetaglimpseoftheessenceofAmericansociety,allthewhilepromotinghisownphilosophy:
