Inhishorrorandconfusion,hewavedhisarmsandaccidentallycuttwoofhisfingersontheshark'steeth.Hethenslidofftheoppositesideofhissurfboardintothewater.Then,withCraiginthewaterandbloodflowingfromhisfingers,thefive-meter-longsharksimplyswamaway,disappearingintothewaterbelow.

Althoughsharksareoftencategorizedaskillersthathuntandeatasmanyhumansastheycan,thisisfactuallyinaccurate.Sharksveryrarelykillhumans.Apersonhasagreaterchanceofbeingstruckbylightningordrowninginabaththanofbeingkilledbyashark.Only74peoplehavebeenreportedkilledbygreatwhitesinthelastcentury.Butgreatwhitesharkscanreachsixmetersinlengthandweigh2,200kilogramsormore.Withfrighteningjawsthatcanholdupto3,000teetharrangedinseveralrows,theycouldveryeasilykillandeatahelplesshumaninthewater.Whyisit,then,thatmostpeoplesurviveattacksbygreatwhites?

Sharkresearchersaretryingtocomprehendthereasonsthatallowpeopletoescapewithoutbeingeaten.

Themostcommonexplanationisthatgreatwhitesdon'tseewell.Ithasbeenthoughtthattheymistakepeopleforthesealsorsealionswhichmakeupalargepartoftheirdiet.Thereisreasontodoubtthis,however.Recentinformationshowsthatgreatwhitescanactuallyseeverywell.Also,whenattackingseals,greatwhitesshootuptothesurfaceandbitewithgreatforce.Whenapproachinghumans,however,theymostoftenmoveinslowlyandbitelesshard.Theysoondiscoverthathumansarenotahigh—fatmeal.“Theyspitusoutbecausewe'retoobony,”saysAidanMartin,directorofReefQuestCenterforSharkResearch.
