well,itturnsoutwhenbrainstripleinsize,theydontjustgetthreetimesbigger;theygainnewstructures.andoneofthemainreasonsourbraingotsobigisbecauseitgotanewpart,calledthefrontallobe.andparticularly,apartcalledthepre-frontalcortex.nowwhatdoesapre-frontalcortexdoforyouthatshouldjustifytheentirearchitecturaloverhaulofthehumanskullintheblinkofevolutionarytime?

naturalhappinessiswhatwegetwhenwegetwhatwewanted,andsynthetichappinessiswhatwemakewhenwedontgetwhatwewanted.andinoursociety,wehaveastrongbeliefthatsynthetichappinessisofaninferiorkind.whydowehavethatbelief?

well,itsverysimple.whatkindofeconomicenginewouldkeepchurningifwebelievedthatnotgettingwhatwewantcouldmakeusjustashappyasgettingit?

withallapologiestomyfriendmatthieuricard,ashoppingmallfullofzenmonksisnotgoingtobeparticularlyprofitablebecausetheydontwantstuffenough.iwanttosuggesttoyouthatsynthetichappinessiseverybitasrealandenduringasthekindofhappinessyoustumbleuponwhenyougetexactlywhatyouwereaimingfor.now,imascientist,soimgoingtodothisnotwithrhetoric,butbymarinatingyouinalittlebitofdata.
