Themostcommonformofexposuretomercuryisbyeatingfishcontainingmethylmercury(甲基水银),anorganicformofthechemicalwhichformswhenbacteriareactwithmercuryinwater,soilorplants.Levelsofmercuryintheworld’secosystemshaveincreasedbybetween200%and500%,sincetheindustrialrevolutionsayexperts,drivenupbytheuseoffossilfuelssuchascoal.
Inrecentyearstherehavebeenconcentratedeffortstolimittheamountofmercuryenteringtheenvironment,withaninternationaltreaty,calledtheMinamataConvention,signedby136countriesinplacesince2013.
