SnowinSvalbardtypicallycoversthegroundforeightmonthsoftheyear,which,combinedwithlowtemperatures,limitsgrassgrowthtoJuneandJuly.Butassummertemperatureshaveincreasedbyaround1.5℃,grasshasbecomemoreproductive,allowingfemalereindeertogainmoreweightbytheautumnandthereforetohavemorebabies.However,warmerwintershavebroughtwiththemgreaterrainfallwhichfreezeswhenitsettlesonthesnow.Reindeercanoftenaccessthepoorfoodsourcesbeneaththesnowbyclearingitawaywiththeirantlers(鹿角),buttheycannotbreakthroughthehardice.Asaresult,femalereindeerarebecomingstarved,causingthemtoaborttheirbabiesorgivebirthtomuchlighteryoung.
