CONTEXTANDPURPOSE:
Chapter15isthefourthchapterinafour-chaptersequenceonthelevelandgrowthofoutputinthelongrun.InChapter12,welearnedthatcapitalandlaborareamongtheprimarydeterminantsofoutputandgrowth.InChapter13,weaddressedhowsavingandinvestmentincapitalgoodsaffecttheproductionofoutput.InChapter14,welearnedaboutsomeofthetoolspeopleandfirmsusewhenchoosingcapitalprojectsinwhichtoinvest.InChapter15,weseehowfullutilizationofourlaborresourcesimprovesthelevelofproductionandourstandardofliving.
ThepurposeofChapter15istointroducestudentstothelabormarket.Wewillseehoweconomistsmeasuretheperformanceofthelabormarketusingunemploymentstatistics.Wewillalsoaddressanumberofsourcesofunemploymentandsomepoliciesthatthegovernmentmightusetolowercertaintypesofunemployment.
