   AlaskaofficialssaidFridaythatupto267,000gallonsofcrudeoilpouredoutofapipelineatthePrudhoeBayfield,makingitthelargestoilspilleverrecordedonthestate'sNorthSlope.

   TheAlaskaDepartmentofEnvironmentalConservationestimatedthataminimumof201,000gallonsspilledatPrudhoeBay,thelargestU.S.oilfield.

   Thespilledoilspreadover1.9acresofsnow-coveredtundraandtheenvironmentalimpactremainsunknown,accordingtoLesliePearson,on-scenecoordinatorfortheDepartmentofEnvironmentalConservation.

   ThespillwasdiscoveredMarch2onthewestsideofPrudhoeBaybyaworkerforfieldoperatorBPExploration（Alaska）Inc.

   Officialsexpectthecleanuptotakefourtosixweeks.Sofar,52,920gallonsofoilhadbeenrecovered,accordingtoanewsreleaseissuedbythestate,federalandBP'sjointemergencyresponseteam.

AnewsurveyofeasternAntarcticahasrevealedasurprisingfind:

twolakesburiedbeneatha4-kilometer-thickicesheetthatrivalthefamousLakeVostokinsize.Thelakesmayholdexoticlife,andtheirpositionalongancientfaultlinescouldshedlightonhowanearbymountainrangeformed.

Earthscientistshavesofarspiedabout145subglaciallakesinAntarctica.Sandwichedbetweentheiceaboveandbedrockbelow,thelakesstayliquidduetoacombinationofgeothermalheatandthecrushingpressureoftheicesheet.LakeVostok,byfarthelargestoftheselakes,iswell-mapped,andaRussianteamisnowdrillingthroughitsicecapinhopesoffindinglifeinside.Butscientistsknowlittleaboutmostoftheregion'slakes,spottedonlyfromsparseradarsurveys.

ThestudyfoundthatthelakesaresecondinsizeonlytoLakeVostokandarenestledindeepdepressions.At2000squarekilometers,90°EisroughlyhalfthesizeofRhodeIslandandreachesroughlyakilometerdeep--aboutthesameasVostok.Sovetskayaisalmostaslarge,at1400squarekilometers,andlikelyasdeep.Thelakes'depthsandtheruggedterrainsurroundingthemsuggestthattheylieincrevassesalongancientfaults,longdormant.Becausethedepressionsthatcradlethelakesaresolargeanddeep,theresearchersarguethelakeshavelikelystayedstablethroughclimatechangesandhavebeentheresinceAntarcticawaswarmandrainy,morethan35millionyearsago.Ifso,thismayincreasethechancesthattheyharborlife,theteamreportsintheFebruaryissueofGeophysicalResearchLetters.

Theideathatalotofsubglaciallakesformalongfaultsis"verylikelytobecorrect,"saysglaciologistGarryClarkeoftheUniversityofBritishColumbiainVancouver,Canada.Ifthisbearsout,headds,"youcouldusethelocationofthelakestomapstripesacrossAntarcticaanddecidewherethetectonicfeaturesare."ThatcouldhelpresearchersunderstandmysteriessuchastheGamburtsevMountains,whichdonotappeartohavebeenshapedbythetectonicactivitythathelpedformothermajormountainranges.
