MyTeachingPhilosophy

Ihavelittleexperienceofteaching,butIdolearnalotfrommyteachersandclassmates.WhenIhadmyexperiencewithaprimaryschoolstudentlastyear,Iencounteredlotsofproblemsandknewlittleaboutthecausesandsolutions.ButnowIhavemoresystematicunderstandingaboutEnglishteaching.ThereisanimageoftheteacherwhomIwouldliketobeinmymind.

  Iwanttobeonememberoftheclass.Idon’tthinktheteachershouldalwayswearthefaceof“authority”andholdthecontrolofthestudents.Iwanttogivestudentsmorefreedomtopracticeself-control,self-manage.AndIcangivesomedirectionsandsuggestions.Foronething,theseabilitieswillbehelpfultostudents’wholegrowth;foranother,throughtheinteractionandnegotiationwithstudents,Iwanttoestablishamorefriend-likerelationship.

Asateacher,Iamalsoalifelonglearner.JustasConfusionsaid,“IfIamwalkingwithtwoothermen,eachofthemwillserveasmyteacher”.Ineedtolearnfrommyfellowteachers,whoaremoreexperiencedorhavedifferentteachingexperience.AlsoIcanlearnalotfromstudents.Everyyearthecurriculumchanged,andthestudentsaredifferent.Tofacethesechallenges,Ihavetolearntokeepthepaceofthechanges.

  Itrytotreateverystudentequallyandfairly.Iacknowledgeandrespectthedifferencesofthestudents.Everystudentisspecialandimportant,nomatterwhomheorsheis,whereheorshecomesfrom.Inmyclass,Iwantthemtohavesamechancetolearn,toexpress,togrow;however,itdoesn’tmeanthatIwilltreateverystudentinthesameway.

  Ievaluatestudentsaccordingtotheirperformancesandprogressintheclassratherthanthescoresofthetests.Iadvocatepraiseandpositivereinforcementwhenrespondingtothestudents;ifcriticismisneeded,Itrytomakeitclearandspecific.Studentslearnnotonlytheknowledgeaboutthesubjectbutalsohowtolearn.Igivestudentssomeevaluation-freehomework,whichcanbeevaluatedbystudentsthemselvesorbytheirpeers.

  Iadoptvariousgroupactivitiesinmyclass,andIencouragecooperativelearning.Cooperativeactivitiescreatemoreactiveatmosphere,reducestudents’learninganxiety,givethemmoreconfidence,andmotivatethemtolearn.Butgroupactivitiesshouldbevariousandrelativetostudents’currentknowledgeandabilities,sothattheycanfindthebestplaceintheirgroupandlearneffectively.
