Thereasonissimple:

withsomesubsidies(补贴),electriccarsandbusesarenowcost-competitivewithfossil-fuelledvehicles.Electricbuseshavemadethegreatestinroadsintothemarket,becausetheyarealogicalchoiceforelectrification.Bytheendof2018,electricvehiclesweredisplacingabout280,000barrelsofoildemandperday—about84percentofwhichwasduetobuses.

Buttheelectriccarmarketisalsoreachingmaturity,withappealingdesigns,longerranges,andaquickly-expandingrapidchargingnetworkinmanycountries.It’sworthemphasizingthatmostoftheinfrastructure(基础设施)necessarytorechargeelectricvehiclesalreadyexists.Peopleoftentendtoassumethatwewouldneedtoreplaceeverygasstation,butvirtuallyallhomesandbusinessesalreadyhaveanelectricalconnectionwhichcanbeeasilyimprovedforrapidcharging.Allthatisneededtogofullyelectricisenoughbatterycapacityandrapidchargingstationstodealwithlongtrips.

NowAmericawouldhavetorepairitselectricityproduction,freightrails,shipping,andsoontofullydecarbonize(脱碳)thetransportationsector,whichtakentogetherwillbeconsiderablymoredifficultthansimplyextirpatingfossil-fuelledvehiclesfromthemarket.

Old,unwantedclothesareactuallyahugeburdenontheenvironment.Theyusuallyendupinlandfills,wheretheyrotawaywithoutanyuseforus,atthesametimepollutingtheenvironment.Cheap,throwawayclothesproduce10milliontonsoflandfillintheUSaloneeachyear.However,shredding(撕碎)them,wecouldcreatenewmaterials.Scientistsfirstlyremovedzippers,buttonsandotherhardpieces,thenshreddedthemessofclothesandthenaddedsomechemicalstobondthesefibrestogether.Thelaststepwasheatingandpressingthismaterialtoformsolidpanels.Theyarestrong,water-resistantandnoteasytocatchfire.Theirqualitycanbefurthertunedbyaddingsomeothermaterials,suchassawdust,oldfoam,paperandsoon.Differentmixturesresultindifferenttextures(质地)andcolours,someresemblingwood,ceramicsorstone.
