1Althoughglobalwarmingisapopulartopicinscienceclassesinmostmiddleandhighschools,thereislittleunderstandingofthegreenhouseeffect.AndersonandWallin(2000)conductedastudyfocusingonhighschoolstudents.Theyfoundthatthesestudentshadseveraldifferentrepresentationsofthegreenhouseeffect.Manyconfusedthegreenhouseeffectwithglobalwarminganddescribeditbylistingthecausesofglobalwarming.Othersconfusedthegreenhouseeffectwith“theozoneeffect”(AndersonandWallin,2000).Thisconfusionabouttherelationshipbetweenthegreenhouseeffectandtheozoneeffectiscommon(Francisetal.,1993;MeadowsandWiesenmayer,1999;Ryeetal.,1997).DatafromMeadowsandWiesenmayer’s(1999)studyindicatethatsomestudentshaveincorporatedthismisconceptionintotheirknowledgeframeworksofglobalwarminganduseittoreasonaboutallissuesrelatedtotheglobalwarmingphenomenon.Otherworkshowsthatsomepre-serviceteachersalsoattributethecauseofclimatechangetothedepletionoftheozonelayer(Papadimiriou,2004).

2Obviously,helpingstudentshaveabetterunderstandingofgreenhousegasesandtheirimpactonthetemperatureoftheEarthisurgent.Intheworkpresentedinthispaper,aseriesofactivitieswereconductedaroundtheGlobalWarming:
VirtualEarth(GWVE)curriculumunit.Thegoalisforstudentstolearnabouttheroleofeachconceptinthegreenhouseeffectandtounderstandhowtheyinteracttocreatethegreenhouseeffect.Theactivitiesalsohelpstudentsunderstandtherelationshipbetweenthegreenhouseeffectandglobalwarming.Wemeasurestudents’representationsbyanalyzingtheirresponsestoaseriesofopen-endedquestionsabouttheconceptscoveredinthemodule.

3Themainresearchquestionis,“Howdoesstudents’understandingofthegreenhouseeffectandglobalwarmingchangeafterparticipatinginatechnology-enhancedlearningenvironmentfeaturingvirtualexperimentswithaninteractivevisualization”ThisresearchisbasedonGWVEcurriculumunit.Intheweek-longunitduringtheirscienceclasses,studentsparticipateinaneight-question,paper-and-pencilassessmentpriortoandfollowingparticipationintheunit,creatingamatchedsamplecomparison.Aseriesofmatchedsamplet-testsareusedtodeterminethedegreeofsignificancebetweenpre-andpost-testperformance.

4FiveteachersfromthreeschoolsonthewestcoastandtwoschoolsinthesoutheasternUSenactedthecurriculumunitintheirsixth-gradescienceclasses.Theteacherseachhadatleasttwoyearsofexperienceusingourcurriculumunitsintheirinstruction.Eachteacherreceivedtargetedprofessionaldevelopmentsupport(Varmaetal.,2008).TheprofessionaldevelopmentactivitiesincludedmeetingstointroducetheoverallWeb-basedInquiryScienceEnvironment(WISE)andtheGWVEunit.Teachersalsoreceivedclassroomsupporttohelpthemincorporatetheactivitiesintheirinstruction(Varmaetal.,2008).Onehundredandninetysixth-gradestudents(98malesand92females)participatedintheunitactivitiesandthepre-/post-assessments.
美国西海岸三所学校的五名教师和美国东南部的两所学校开设了六年级的课程单元。
每位教师在教学中都有至少两年的课程使用经验。

5Students’participationbeganwiththeirindividualcompletionofaneight-question,paper-and-pencilpre-test.Classroomteachersadministeredthepre-testduringthestudents’normalclassmeetings.Thequestions,presentedinTable1,wereprimarilyopen-endedquestionsaboutglobalwarming,thegreenhouseeffect,andtheindividualfactorsthatcontributetothesephenomena.Followingthepre-test,allstudentsworkedinpairstocompletetheactivitiesandembeddedreflectionnotesintheGWVEunit.
