InaninterviewfortheBBC’swebsite,BritishlinguistDavidCrystalsuggestedtheremaybehistoricalreasonsforthesheernumberofoddwordsandphrasesinBritishEnglish.Hethinksthattheybeganinthelate16thandearly17thcenturies.Thiswasagreatageforthetheater,whenShakespeareandotherwritersworkedhardtokeepupwiththedemandfornewplays.Thetheater’spopularityalsocreatedanincentive(刺激)toinventnewwords.

Withthisinmind,perhapsShakespeareandhispeersaretoblameforunusualBritishwordssuchas“codswallop”and“balderdash”–whichboth,ironically,mean“nonsense”.
