TheWebpagesarecreatedwithaformallanguagecalledHypertextMarkupLanguage(HTML).Thetermhypertextisusedtodescribeaninterlinkedsystemofdocumentsinwhichausermayjumpfromonedocumenttoanotherinanonlinearway.HyperlinkmakestheInterneteasytonavigate.Itisanobject(word,phrase,orpicture)onaWebpagethat,whenclicked,transfersyoutoanewWebpage.TheWebpagecontainsanaddresslocationknownasUniformResourceLocator(URL).Whenhypertextpagesaremixedwithothermedia,theresultiscalledhypermedia.
ThefollowingaretheimportantservicefunctionsthatInternetprovides.
1.E-mail
ThemostwidelyusedtoolontheInternetiselectronicmailorE-mail.E-mailenablesyoutosendmessagestoAmerica,Australiaandsoon,nomatterhowfarbetweenindividuals.E-mailmessagesaregenerallysentfromandreceivedbymailservers—computersthatarededicatedtoprocessinganddirectingE-mail.OnceaserverhasreceivedamessageitdirectsittothespecificcomputerthattheE-mailisaddressedto.TosendE-mail,theprocessisreversed.Asaveryconvenientandinexpensivewaytotransmitmessages,E-mailhasgrammaticallyaffectedscientific,personal,andbusinesscommunications.Insomecases,E-mailhasreplacedthetelephoneforcarryingmessages.
2.Filetransfer
FileTransferProtocol(FTP)isamethodoftransferringfilesfromonecomputertoanotherovertheInternet,evenifeachcomputerhasadifferentoperatingsystemorstorageformat.FTPisdesignedtodownloadfilesoruploadfiles.TheabilitytouploadanddownloadfilesonitisoneofthemostvaluablefeaturestheInternethastooffer.Thisisespeciallyhelpfulforthosepeoplewhorelyoncomputersforvariouspurposesandwhomayneedsoftwaredriversandupgradesimmediately.Networkadministratorscanrarelywaitevenafewdaystogetthenecessarydriversthatenabletheirnetworkserverstofunctionagain.TheInternetcanprovidethesefilesimmediatelybyusingFTP.FTPisaclient-serverapplicationjustlikeE-mailandTelnet.Itrequiresserversoftwarerunningonahostthatcanbeaccessedbyclientsoftware.

TheWorldWideWeb(WWW),whichHypertextTransferProtocol(HTTP)workswith,isthefastestgrowingandmostwidely-usedpartoftheInternet.ItprovidesaccesstomultipleservicesanddocumentsasGopherdoesbutismoreambitiousinitsmethod.AjumptootherInternetservicecanbetriggeredbyamouseclickona“hot-linked”word,image,oriconontheWebpages.OneofthemainreasonsfortheextraordinarygrowthoftheWebistheeaseinwhichitallowsaccesstoinformation.OnelimitationofHTTPisthatyoucanonlyuseittodownloadfiles,andnottouploadthem.

TelnetallowsanInternetusertoconnecttoadistancecomputerandusethatcomputerasifheorshewereusingitdirectly.TomakeaconnectionwithaTelnetclient,youmustselectaconnectionoption:
“HostName”and“TerminalType”.ThehostnameistheIPaddress(DNS)oftheremotecomputertowhichyouconnect.Theterminaltypedescribesthetypeofterminalemulationthatyouwantthecomputertoperform.
