Inrecentdecades,countriesaroundtheworldhavemadegreatprogressagainstmalaria.However,anewreportfromtheWorldHealthOrganization(WHO)saysthatprogressisatrisk.

ThisWHOannualreportlooksattheglobalfightagainstthedisease.Itsaysthatmalariacasesareontheriseinseveralcountries.

Manycountriesaremovingtowardeliminatingmalaria,amongthemMadagascar,SenegalandZimbabwe.However,theWHOreportwarnsthatinothers,progresshasstalled.

Malariacasesincreasedbymorethan20percentfrom2015to2016ineightAfricancountries-includingRwanda,NigeriaandtheDemocraticRepublicofCongo.

Atthesametime,fundingformalariapreventionandtreatmenthasleveledoff,reaching$2.7billionin2016.Thisamountislessthanhalfofthe2020target.

ProfessorDavidConwayisfromtheLondonSchoolofHygieneandTropicalMedicine.Hesaysmoneyforfightingmalariahasplateaued,meaningithasnotincreasedinalongtime.

Overall,Africacontinuestosufferthemostfrommalaria.In2016,justover400,000peoplediedfromthedisease.Thisisslightlylessthanin2015.However,inAfricathemalariaparasitedoesnotyetappeartobedevelopingdrugresistance.
