JackandBen,bothseriouslyill,occupiedthesamehospitalroom.Jack,whosebedwasnexttotheroom'sonlywindow,wasallowedtositupinhisbedforanhoureachafternoontohelpdrainthefluidfromhislungs.ButBenhadtospendalldayandnightflatonhisbed.Tokilltimethetwomenbegantotalk.Theytalkedforhoursabouttheirwives,families,theirhomes,theirjobs,theirinvolvementinthemilitaryservice,andwheretheyhadbeenonvacation.Asdayswentby,adeepfriendshipbegantodevelopbetweenthem.

EveryafternoonwhenJackcouldsitup,hewouldpassthetimebydescribingtoBenallthethingshecouldseeoutsidethewindow.AndBenbegantoliveforthoseone-hourperiodswherehisworldwouldbebroadenedandenlivenedbyalltheactivityandcoloroftheworldoutside.

Thewindowoverlookedaparkwithalovelylake.Ducksandswansplayedonthewaterwhilechildrensailedtheirmodelboats.Youngloverswalkedarminarmamidflowersofeverycoloroftherainbow.Grandoldtreesbeautifiedthelandscape,andafineviewofthecityskylinecouldbeseeninthedistance.

AsJackdescribedallthisinexquisitedetail,Benwouldclosehiseyesandimaginethepicturesquescenes.

OnewarmafternoonJackdescribedaparadepassingby.AlthoughBencouldn'theartheband--hecouldseeitinhismind'seyeasJackportrayeditwithdescriptivewords.

Daysandweekspassed.OnemorningthedaynursearrivedtobringwaterfortheirbathsonlytofindthelifelessbodyofJack,whohaddiedpeacefullyinhissleep.Shewassaddenedandcalledthehospitalattendantstotakethebodyaway.

Benwasheartbroken.LifewithoutJackwasevenmoreunbearable.HowhelongedtohearJack'svoiceandhismelodiousdescriptionsoftheoutsideworld!

Ashelookedatthewindow,anideasuddenlyoccurredtohim.Perhapshecouldseeforhimselfwhatitwaslikeoutside.Assoonasitseemedappropriate,Benaskedifhecouldbemovednexttothewindow.Thenursewashappytomaketheswitch,andaftermakingsurehewascomfortable,shelefthimalone.

Slowly,painfully,heproppedhimselfupononeelbowtotakehisfirstlookattheworldoutside.Finally,hewouldhavethejoyofseeingitforhimself!
