Totesttherolethatemotionplaysinforminglong-lastingopinions,theresearchersconductedsevenindependentstudiesinvolvingmorethan20,000participantsinvariousreal-worldsituations.
Thefirstsurvey,whichwasconductedthedayafterChristmas,measuredfeelingsaboutrecentlyreceivedgifts.Theparticipantsweregivenalistofadjectives(形容词)todescribetheiropinionstowardtheirgifts.Adjectiveslike“worthwhile”wereassociatedwithapracticalreactiontothegift,whilewordslike“delightful”weremorestronglyassociatedwithanemotionalreaction.Onemonthlater,theparticipantscompletedafollow-upsurveytotesttheendurance(持久性)oftheiropinions.Theresultsshowedthatthestrongerthepositiveemotionalreaction,themorelikelythatopinionremainedfixedonemonthlater.
Inthefinaltest,participantsreadoneoftwomessagesaboutanimaginaryseaanimal.Onemessagecontainedbroad-rangingfactsabouttheanimal(low-emotioncondition).Theothermessagewasaboutaswimmer’sunderwaterinteractionwiththeanimal(high-emotioncondition).Theparticipantsinthehigh-emotionconditionshowedsignificantlylesschangeintheiropinionsacrosstime.
“Emotionalityisanunrecognizedpredictor(预测因子)oflong-lastingopinions,”saidAndrewLuttrell,aresearcheratBallStateUniversity.“Thesefindingsareimportantforunderstandingwhysomeopinionsaresodifficulttochangeaswellashowtocreateopinionsthatstick.”
