Nightingaleknewthatinorderfornursestodomore,theyneededspecialtraininginhowtotakecareofsickpeople.NightingalewenttoahospitalinGermanytostudynursing.ThenshereturnedtoLondonandbecametheheadofagroupofwomencalledGentlewomenDuringIllness.Thesewomencaredforsickpeopleintheirhomes.

In1854,EnglandwasfightingawarwithRussia.Thereporterswroteabouttheterribleconditionsinthehospitalsthatcaredforthewounded.Peopledemandedthatsomethingbedoneaboutit.AleaderofthegovernmentaskedFlorenceNightingaletotakesomenursesintothewarhospitals.So,inNovember1854,Nightingalefinallygottoworkinahospital.

Shetookalong38nurseswhomshehadtrainedherself.

Atfirst,thedoctorsonthebattlefieldsdidnotwantNightingaleandhernursesintheirhospitals.Theydidnotbelievethatwomencouldhelp.Butinfact,thenursesdidmakeadifference.Theyworkedaroundtheclock,lookingafterthewounded.Thankstotheirhardwork,manywoundedsoldierssurvived.AftertheWar,Nightingaleandhernursesweretreatedlikeheroes.Finally,in1860,shestartedtheNightingaleSchoolforNurses.Intime,thankstoFlorenceNightingale,nursingbecameanimportantpartofmedicine.
