TheLouvretreasurescandatebacktothecollectionofFrancescoI(1515-1547),whoboughtmanyItalianpaintings.DuringtheruleofLouisXIV(1643-1715)thisamountedtoonly200artworks,butitalsoincreasedasaresultofdonationsandpurchases.Itwasopenedforthefirsttimetothepublicin1793.SincethentheLouvrecollectionhasbeencontinuouslyenriched.
