unchangingTao.Thenamethatcanbenamedisnottheenduringand 

unchangingname. 

2.（Conceivedofas）havingnoname,itistheOriginatorofheavenand 

earth;（conceivedofas）havinganame,itistheMotherofallthings. 

3.Alwayswithoutdesirewemustbefound,Ifitsdeepmysterywe 

wouldsound;Butifdesirealwayswithinusbe,Itsouterfringeis 

allthatweshallsee. 

4.Underthesetwoaspects,itisreallythesame;butasdevelopment 

takesplace,itreceivesthedifferentnames.Togetherwecallthemthe 

Mystery.WheretheMysteryisthedeepestisthegateofallthatissubtle 

andwonderful. 

2.1.Allintheworldknowthebeautyofthebeautiful,andindoing 

thistheyhave（theideaof）whatuglinessis;theyallknowtheskillofthe 

skilful,andindoingthistheyhave（theideaof）whatthewantofskillis. 

2.Soitisthatexistenceandnon-existencegivebirththeoneto（the 

ideaof）theother;thatdifficultyandeaseproducetheone（theideaof）the 

other;thatlengthandshortnessfashionouttheonethefigureoftheother; 

that（theideasof）heightandlownessarisefromthecontrastoftheone 

withtheother;thatthemusicalnotesandtonesbecomeharmonious 

throughtherelationofonewithanother;andthatbeingbeforeandbehind 

givetheideaofonefollowinganother. 

3.Thereforethesagemanagesaffairswithoutdoinganything,and 

conveyshisinstructionswithouttheuseofspeech. 

4.Allthingsspringup,andthereisnotonewhichdeclinestoshow 

itself;theygrow,andthereisnoclaimmadefortheirownership;theygo 

throughtheirprocesses,andthereisnoexpectation（ofarewardforthe 

results）.Theworkisaccomplished,andthereisnorestinginit（asan 

achievement）. 

Theworkisdone,buthownoonecansee;'Tisthisthatmakes 

thepowernotceasetobe.

3.1.Nottovalueandemploymenofsuperiorabilityisthewayto 

keepthepeoplefromrivalryamongthemselves;nottoprizearticleswhich 

aredifficulttoprocureisthewaytokeepthemfrombecomingthieves; 

nottoshowthemwhatislikelytoexcitetheirdesiresisthewaytokeep 

theirmindsfromdisorder. 

2.Thereforethesage,intheexerciseofhisgovernment,emptiestheir 

minds,fillstheirbellies,weakenstheirwills,andstrengthenstheirbones. 

3.Heconstantly（triesto）keepthemwithoutknowledgeandwithout 

desire,andwheretherearethosewhohaveknowledge,tokeepthemfrom 

presumingtoact（onit）.Whenthereisthisabstinencefromaction,good 

orderisuniversal. 

4.1.TheTaois（like）theemptinessofavessel;andinour 

employmentofitwemustbeonourguardagainstallfulness.Howdeep 

andunfathomableitis,asifitweretheHonouredAncestorofallthings!

2.Weshouldbluntoursharppoints,andunravelthecomplicationsof 

things;weshouldattemperourbrightness,andbringourselvesinto 

agreementwiththeobscurityofothers.HowpureandstilltheTaois,as 

ifitwouldeversocontinue!

3.Idonotknowwhosesonitis.Itmightappeartohavebeenbefore 

God. 

5.1.Heavenandearthdonotactfrom（theimpulseof）anywishto 

bebenevolent;theydealwithallthingsasthedogsofgrassaredealtwith. 

Thesagesdonotactfrom（anywishtobe）benevolent;theydealwiththe 

peopleasthedogsofgrassaredealtwith. 

2.Maynotthespacebetweenheavenandearthbecomparedtoa 

bellows?

'Tisemptied,yetitlosesnotitspower;'Tismovedagain,and 

sendsforthairthemore.Muchspeechtoswiftexhaustionleadwesee; 

Yourinnerbeingguard,andkeepitfree. 

6.Thevalleyspiritdiesnot,ayethesame;Thefemalemystery 

thusdowename.Itsgate,fromwhichatfirsttheyissuedforth,Is 

calledtherootfromwhichgrewheavenandearth.Longandunbroken 

doesitspowerremain,Usedgently,andwithoutthetouchofpain. 

7.1.Heavenislong-enduringandearthcontinueslong.Thereason

whyheavenandearthareabletoendureandcontinuethuslongisbecause 

theydonotliveof,orfor,themselves.Thisishowtheyareableto 

continueandendure. 

2.Thereforethesageputshisownpersonlast,andyetitisfoundin 

theforemostplace;hetreatshispersonasifitwereforeigntohim,andyet 

thatpersonispreserved.Isitnotbecausehehasnopersonalandprivate 

ends,thatthereforesuchendsarerealised?

8.1.Thehighestexcellenceislike（thatof）water.Theexcellence 

ofwaterappearsinitsbenefitingallthings,andinitsoccupying,without 

striving（tothecontrary）,thelowplacewhichallmendislike.Hence（its 

way）isnearto（thatof）theTao.
