IenteredadulthoodthinkingIwasn't“enough”—anideathatwasseedednotonlybythefactthat“skinny”iscelebrated,butalsobythelanguageassociatedwithaccountsoflosingweight—selfimprovement,discipline—allvirtues.Beingfatquicklycategorizesyouaslazyandundisciplined.Consumedbythoughtsofthewaymybodylooked,Ididn'tnoticetheotherwaysmybodyneededattention.Ifailedtorealize,forexample,thatmyperiodwasmuchheavierandmorepainfulthaneverbefore.ActuallyIdevelopedararediseaseandlaterIhadtwosurgeries.
