　　iknowthatformanyofyou,todayisthefirstdayofschool.andforthoseofyouinkindergarten,orstartingmiddleorhighschool,itsyourfirstdayinanewschool,soitsunderstandableifyourealittlenervous.iimaginetherearesomeseniorsouttherewhoarefeelingprettygoodrightnow--（applause）--withjustonemoreyeartogo.andnomatterwhatgradeyourein,someofyouareprobablywishingitwerestillsummerandyoucouldvestayedinbedjustalittlebitlongerthismorning.

　　iknowthatfeeling.wheniwasyoung,myfamilylivedoverseas.ilivedinindonesiaforafewyears.andmymother,shedidnthavethemoneytosendmewherealltheamericankidswenttoschool,butshethoughtitwasimportantformetokeepupwithanamericaneducation.soshedecidedtoteachmeextralessonsherself,mondaythroughfriday.butbecauseshehadtogotowork,theonlytimeshecoulddoitwasat4:

　　ivetalkedalotaboutyourgovernmentsresponsibilityforsettinghighstandards,andsupportingteachersandprincipals,andturningaroundschoolsthatarentworking,wherestudentsarentgettingtheopportunitiesthattheydeserve.

　　butattheendoftheday,wecanhavethemostdedicatedteachers,themostsupportiveparents,thebestschoolsintheworld--andnoneofitwillmakeadifference,noneofitwillmatterunlessallofyoufulfillyourresponsibilities,unlessyoushowuptothoseschools,unlessyoupayattentiontothoseteachers,unlessyoulistentoyourparentsandgrandparentsandotheradultsandputinthehardworkittakestosucceed.thatswhatiwanttofocusontoday:

　　andthisisntjustimportantforyourownlifeandyourownfuture.whatyoumakeofyoureducationwilldecidenothinglessthanthefutureofthiscountry.thefutureofamericadependsonyou.whatyourelearninginschooltodaywilldeterminewhetherweasanationcanmeetourgreatestchallengesinthefuture.
