ChristaMcAuliffewasbornin1948andshewasanastronautalmostbyaccident.In1984,NASAdecidedtofindateacherwhocouldaccompanyastronautsintospace.Theyhopedthatshewouldbeabletocommunicatewithstudentsfromspaceandencourageeveryoneofthemtobeinterestedinspacetravel.Christawasasecondaryteacherinhistoryandsocialstudies.Shewasagiftedteacherandshewasselectedfromover11,000applicantstogoonflightSTS-51-L.Shewasalsoaverygoodcommunicatorandsheimmediatelyestablishedaverygoodrelationshipwiththenewsmedia(radio,televisionandnewspapers).Itwaspartlybecauseofthisthattherewasagreatdealofinterestandexcitementabouttheflight.ThousandsofstudentsinschoolsanduniversitiesallaroundthecountrywerelookingforwardtocommunicatingwithChristainspace.Millionsofpeoplewerewatchingherflightwithgreatinterest.ItispartlybecauseoftheexcitementoverMcAuliffe'splaceintheflightthatthedisasterin1986hadsuchaneffectonpeople.
