(一)Culturalrelics

Someoftheworld’sgreatestwondersarethehistoricalsitesthathaveexistedforhundredsandsometimesthousandsofyears.Manyofthemwerelosttohumanknowledgeforcenturiesbeforetheywereuncovered.Thankstourbanization,naturaldisasters,andpollution,however,itislikelythatthesehistoricallandmarkswillbelostoncemorebeforetheendofthiscentury.
1.Lamu,Kenya
ThiscityhasbeenaWorldHeritageSitesince2001,butithasbeenaroundsincethe14thcentury.LamuwasoneoftheoriginalSwahilisettlements,foundedontheeastcoastofAfrica,andit’sstillinhabitedtothisday.Duringitsgoldenage,Lamuwasoneofthebiggestcitiesaround,ascholasticcenterofarts,politics,andliterature.ThecitylaterbecameanimportantstrategiclocationforbothGermanyandBritian,anditonlygaineditsindependencealongwithKenyainthe1960s.
AlthoughLamuhasbeenabustlingtownfilledwithpeopleformanycenturies,peoplenowadaysaredoingtheirbesttoavoidorleaveit.In2011,traveltoLamuwasbannedduetoseveralkidnappingscarriedoutbytheterroristgroupAl-Shaabab,whoclaimsvengeanceforstolenMuslimlandsasitsmotiveforthekidnappingsaswellasseveralbrutalassaultsonthecityjustthisyearthathaveleftmanydead.TheterroristattacksmakeitallbutimpossibletopreservehistoricalsitessuchasLamuFort.
2.Hisham’sPalace
Hisham’sPalacewasburiedunderneaththesandinA.D.747andremainedthereuntilPalestinianarcheologistD.C.Baramkibeganexcavatingitin1934.Sadly,historiansfearthatthesitemightnotbearoundinasfewas100years.
Intriguingly,nooneisquitesurewhatHisham’sPalaceissupposedtobe.Whenitvanishedfromsight,italsoseemedtovanishfromanyhistoricaltext.Theonlyhintarchaeologistshavefoundisachunkofpotterybearingthename"Hisham".Baramki’scolleague,RobertW.Hamilton,hasarguedthatthisisproofthatthepalacebelongedtotheheirofthecaliph,Al-WalidII.Allwereallyknowforsureisthatitwasdefinitelybuiltintheearlyeighthcenturyanddestroyedbyamassiveearthquake.Tragically,wemightneverknowthepalace’ssecrets.It’sthreatenedbythemassiveexpansionfromtheneighboring,modernJerichoaswellasextremelyvulnerabletothenaturalelementsafterbeingburiedunderthesandforsolong.Thesandappearstobeseekingtoclaimityetagain.
3.Intramuros市中市
ThenameofthisdistrictofManila,whichisthesecondlargestcityinthePhilippines,means"withinthewalls".It’saveryappropriatemoniker,consideringthatithasbeenguardedbythesamewallssincetheywerebuiltinthe16thcenturydespitethehorrificdamageanddestructiontheyhaveendured.Itwastheoriginalcapitalofthecity,whentheSpanishEmpirestillownedtheterritory.
DuringWorldWarII,theImperialJapaneseArmyinvadedthePhilippines.Manilawashitespeciallyhard,andseveralhistoricalbuildingswithinIntramuros—suchastheSantoDomingoChurchandtheoriginalUniversityofSantoTomas—wereravaged.However,therealdestructionoccurredwhenAmericafoughttotakebackthecityfromJapan.Afterthisattack,only5percentoftheoriginalstructureswereleftstanding,and40percentofthewallshadturnedtorubble.In1951,Intramuroswasdeclaredahistoricmonument.Slowprogresshasbeenmadetowarditsrestoration,includingthereturnofitsfiveoriginalgatestotheirformerglory.However,theseancientwallscannotkeepoutthemodernworld.SeveralfranchisesofStarbucksandMcDonald’shavebeenerectedaroundtheancientcity,andthemoatssurroundingithavebeenconvertedintogolfcourses.Historianstrembleatwhatwillcomenext.
Thoughitislocatedinmodern-dayUkraine,southwestoftheCrimeanPeninsula,ChersoneosisactuallyanancientGreeksite,foundedbetween300and200B.C.However,muchlikeUkrainecurrently,itwasnotapeacefulsite.Thoughitwasoneofthefewrelativelydemocraticsocietiesatthetime,historicalrecordshaveshownthatthiscity-statewasconstantlyatwaragainsttheScythianpeopleandtheRomanEmpire.Iteventuallylostitsindependencetothelatter.
Inthefifthcentury,mostoftheGreekbuildingsandtemplesweredestroyedasChristianitybecamethedominantreligion.However,evenbecomingpartoftheByzantineEmpirewasnotenoughtosavethesociety,asnomadictribesraidedandburneditaroundeightcenturieslater.TheSovietUniondiscoveredthesitewhentheyannexedCrimeainthe1800s.Itwasrigidlyprotectedandreconstructed,becomingoneofthemostimportantsitesforRussianhistoriansandarchaeologiststostudy.Today,itisunderattackbybothnaturalandman-madeforces,ascoastalerosion,pollution,andurbanencroachmentthreatenitsdestruction.
Everyonewho’stakenahighschoolbiologyclassknowsaboutCharlesDarwinandhowhewasinspiredtodevisehistheoryofevolutionwhilestudyingthewildlifeofthesesecludedislands.Nearly9,000species,manyofwhichcanbefoundnowhereelseintheentireworld,calltheseislandshome.However,thewildlifethatmakestheGalapagossouniqueisbeingseriouslythreatened.
Asthenumberofimmigrantworkersandtouristshasincreased,thelatterbymorethan12percenteveryyear,sodoesthenumberofinvasivespecies.Goatsandpigseatthefoodthatthenativespeciesneedtosurvive,andpredatorssuchasratsmakeoffwiththeyoungandtheweak.Forthousandsofyears,therewerenopredatorsatallontheislands,andevolutionworkstooslowlyformanyoftheseuniqueanimalstohopetocatchupintime.
