Ifthesurfacetemperatureanddewpointarebelowfreezing,icecrystals(结晶体)formonthecoolsurfaces.Sometimestheairistoodryforicecrystalstoform,butafrosteventhasstilloccurred.Afrostcanoccurwhentheairtemperatureisabove32°F(0°C).Afreezeoccurswhenamassofcoldairmovesintothearea.Thisweathereventoftenhappensunderwindyconditionswithacloudcover.Atypicalfreezecaseisverydifferentfromafrost.Whentheoutsideairtemperaturefallsbelow32°Fforacertainnumberofhours,afreezecancauseplantdamage.Ahardfreezeoccurswithtemperaturesbelow28°Fforacertainnumberofhours.

Sowhatcanagardenerdotopreparefortheseevents?

Fortunately,wehavelotsofresourcestokeepusinformedontheweather.TV,radioandweatherwebsitescanhelpusknowwhenoneisexpected,thougheventhenwecanbefooled.

Acoupleofyearsago,IfollowedtheTVforecastthatcalledfor36°F,andIdidn’tcovermylettuceplants.WhenIwokeupthenextmorning,itwas26°Foutside.It’sagoodthingmostofourleafygreen,cool-seasonvegetablescantoleratesomefairlylowtemps.Soknowingthecoldiscoming,herearesometipstohelpyourlandscapeplantsandwintervegetablesbundleup.

Maintain2to3inchesofmulch(护根)aroundthebaseoflandscapeplantstoprotectwaterandactasablanketfortheroots.Coverin-groundplantswithplasticsheets,cloth,boxesorsomethingsimilar.Ideally,theleavesshouldnottouchthecoveringbecausefrostandicewillformonthesesurfaces.
