I.AbouttheAuthor---EdwardTwitchellHall(1914---),.anthropologist,author,andteacher,receivedhis.degreeinanthropologyfromColumbiaUniversity.Hehastaughtatvariousinstitutions,suchasHarvardBusinessSchool,theIllinoisInstituteofTechnology,andNorthwesternUniversity.Hisworksinclude:

TheSilentLanguage(1959),astudyofnonverbalcommunication,andTheHiddenDimension(1966),astudyof“socialandpersonalspaceandman’sperceptionofit.”Thepresenttext,aselectionfromTheHiddenDimension,givesacontrastbetweenEnglishandAmericanconceptsofpersonalspace.
