Afterstudyingthisunit,studentsshouldbeableto:
☞Understandthecontroversyoversingle-sexeducation;themaincruxofpubliceducationanditstemporaryconditioninAmerica
Today,formaleducationservesagreaterpercentageoftheU.S.populationthanatanytimeinhistory.Itplayedanimportantrole,butstillexistsomeproblems.TheinfluenceofmodernpsychologyandofeducationreformerssuchasJohnDeweycausedschoolstobecomelessformal,morerelaxed,andsomewhatmorecenteredontheindividualchildratherthanontheinstitutionorthesociety.Schoolfacilitiesimprovedformoststudents,exceptperhapsintheinnercities.Moremoneywasspentoneducation,resultinginbothageneralupgradingofteachersalariesandimprovementsinprogramsthatfocusonspecifickindsofstudents,suchasspecialeducation.
Besides,somemembersoftheschoolreformmovementbelievethattoolittlepowerexistsatthelocallevel.Theyclaimthatteachersandschoolscanincreasetheireffectivenessonlybyhavinggreaterauthorityoversuchfundamentalmattersascurriculumcontent,teachingmethods,andhiringofstaff.Otherreformerscontendthatnotalllocalcommunitieshavetheresourcestoprovidequalityeducation.Theyarguethattomeetgoalsofequityandexcellence,alllocaldistrictsshouldmeethigheducationalstandardsandprovideampleschoolbudgets.
What’smore,inAmerica,asforeducation,peopleholddifferentpointofviewaboutthisquestionwhichworksbetter:
single-sexeducationorco-education?
Theconventionalthinkingthirtyyearsagowasthateducationwouldbreakdowngenderstereotypes.Also,promotingequalityofthesexesandeliminatinggenderbiashavebeenahugesocietalthemeforseveraldecadesnow.Withthatinmindcoeducationwhichisbasedonthatlaudablethemeofequalityseemsliketherightwaytogo.However,somebelievethatcoeducationdoesnotworkforeverychild.Thesamesexeducationisthebetterchoicefortheeducationoftheyouthoftoday.Sincestudentsarethepotentialofthefutureeconomy,itisourresponsibilitytoprovidethemwithbestthatwecan.Samesexeducationcanhelp,andcanhelpalot.
Also,weknowtheplaintruththatboysandgirlslearnindifferentways.Researchshowsthatagirl'sbrainisdifferentfromaboy'sbrain.Onesizedoesnotfitall.Besides,someviewsinglesexeducationasanopportunitytocapitalizeonthelearningdifferencesinherentinboysandgirls.
Fromtheabove,wecanknowthatasforeducationinAmerica,thereisalotofdebate.WiththestudyofTextAandTextB,letstudentsgraspthegeneralideaofAmericaneducation.

Inthissection,oneshouldknowwhatiscriticalthinking?
Criticalthinkingisthatmodeofthinking-aboutanysubject,content,orproblem-inwhichthethinkerimprovesthequalityofhisorherthinkingbyskillfullytakingchargeofthestructuresinherentinthinkingandimposingintellectualstandardsuponthem.
Criticalthinkingcanbeseenashavingtwocomponents:
1)asetofinformationandbeliefgeneratingandprocessingskills,and2)thehabit,basedonintellectualcommitment,ofusingthoseskillstoguidebehavior.
Whatisagoodcriticalthinker?
∙raisesvitalquestionsandproblems,formulatingthemclearlyandprecisely;
∙gathersandassessesrelevantinformation,usingabstractideastointerpretiteffectivelycomestowell-reasonedconclusionsandsolutions,testingthemagainstrelevantcriteriaandstandards;
∙thinksopen-mindedlywithinalternativesystemsofthought,recognizingandassessing,asneedbe,theirassumptions,implications,andpracticalconsequences;and
∙Communicateseffectivelywithothersinfiguringoutsolutionstocomplexproblems.
Criticalthinkingis,inshort,self-directed,self-disciplined,self-monitored,andself-correctivethinking.Itpresupposesassenttorigorousstandardsofexcellenceandmindfulcommandoftheiruse.Itentailseffectivecommunicationandproblem-solvingabilitiesandacommitmenttoovercomeournative
