MethodsofTreatmentinChineseMedicine—Acupuncture&Moxibustion
Acupunctureandmoxibustion,astwoimportantmethodsoftreatment,formanindispensablepartoftraditionalChinesemedicine.
Boththesetwomethodsoftreatmentarebasedonthetheoryofpointsandthetheoryofjingandluo.InTCM,apointisaspecificspotofthebodysurfaceatwhichacupunctureormoxibustioncanbeappliedtoevokeacertainreactioninsomeregionsorviscerasoastoproducetherapeuticeffects.
针灸是治疗方法中两个重要部分,也是传统中药不可或缺的一部分。
这两种治疗方法都是以穴位和经络的理论为基础。
在传统中医中,针灸和艾灸可以使用身体表面的特殊穴位来唤起一些地区或内脏的某种反应来达到治疗效果。

Today,inthetreatmentMoxaleavesareignitedovercertainpointsontheskin’ssurface.Asmolderingrollorsmallconeofdriedandcompactedherbsusuallyprovidestheheatsource.Aconeofmoxaorpowderedleavesofthemugwortplantisplacedonaparticularacupuncturepointandsetalight—aimstoincreasetheamountofyanginthebody.Moxibustionmaybeusedbyitself,butismostcommonlyusedasanancillarytoacupuncturefor“cold”,thatis,chronicdiseases.
现在,在治疗过程中艾叶在皮肤表面的穴位上被点燃。

Portuguesemissionariesinthe16thcenturywereamongthefirsttobringreportsofacupuncturetotheWest.ThefirstEuropeantextonacupuncturewaswrittenbyWillemtenRhijne,aDutchphysicianwhostudiedthepracticefortwoyearsinJapan.
Itconsistedofanessayina1683medicaltextonarthritis;Europeanswerealsoatthetimebecomingmoreinterestedinmoxibustion,whichtenRhijnealsowroteabout.
AcupuncturegainedattentionintheUnitedStateswhenPresidentRichardNixonvisitedChinain1972.ThegreatestexposureintheWestcamewhenNewYorkTimesreporterJamesReston,whoaccompaniedNixonduringthevisit,receivedacupunctureinChinaforpost-operativepainafterundergoinganemergencyappendectomyunderstandardanesthesia.RestonwassoimpressedwiththepainreliefheexperiencedfromtheprocedurethathewroteaboutacupunctureinTheNewYorkTimesuponreturningtotheUnitedStates.In1973,theAmericanInternalRevenueServiceallowedacupuncturetobedeductedasamedicalexpense.
Today,acupuncturecanbeseeninmanycountries,fromGermantoSingaporetoCanada.IntheUK,itisusedtohelpfightdrugsandtreatAIDSpatients.Byroughestimates,about3000acupunctureclinicsexistedintheUKin2003,withover300locatedinLondon.
Inearly2006,Germanyforthefirsttimerecognizedacupunctureasaconventionaltreatment,anditslocallawsnowrequireinsurancecompaniestocoverbillsforacupuncturetreatment.
A2006reportbyTheWorldFederationofAcupuncture-moxibustionSocietiesrevealedthatmorethan140countrieshadappliedacupunctureandmoxibustionintheirpublicmedicalsystems,andthegovernmentswerealsoplanningtoinvestheavilyintheorientalprocedures.
