GAPS–whatisit?

Learnabouttheconditionwhichisbehindmanymentalandphysicalproblems,whichourchildrenandadultssufferfrom,suchasautism,hyperactivityandattentiondeficit,dyslexia,dyspraxia,depression,schizophrenia,bipolardisorder,obsessive-compulsivedisorder,eatingdisordersandmore.

GutandPsychologySyndrome(GAPSyndromeorGAPS)isacondition,whichestablishesaconnectionbetweenthefunctionsofthedigestivesystemandthebrain.ThistermwascreatedbyDrNatashaCampbell-McBride,MD,MMedSci(neurology), MMedSci(humannutrition)in2004afterworkingwithhundredsofchildrenandadultswithneurologicalandpsychiatricconditions,suchasautisticspectrumdisorders,attentiondeficithyperactivitydisorder(ADHD/ADD),schizophrenia,dyslexia,dyspraxia,depression,obsessive–compulsivedisorder,bi-polardisorderandotherneuro-psychologicalandpsychiatricproblems.

Weliveintheworldofunfoldingepidemics.AutisticSpectrumDisorders,AttentionDeficitHyperactivityDisorder(ADHD/ADD),schizophrenia,dyslexia,dyspraxia,depression,obsessive–compulsivedisorder,bi-polardisorderandotherneuro-psychologicalandpsychiatricproblemsinchildrenandyoungadultsarebecomingmoreandmorecommon.

Inclinicalpracticetheseconditionsmoreoftenthannotoverlapwitheachother.Achildwithautismoftenishyperactiveanddyspraxic.Thereisabout50%overlapbetweendyslexiaanddyspraxiaand25-50%overlapbetweenhyperactivityanddyslexiaanddyspraxia.Childrenwiththeseconditionsareoftendiagnosedasbeingdepressedandastheygrowuptheyaremorepronetosubstanceabuseoralcoholismthantheirtypicallydevelopingpeers.Ayoungadultdiagnosedwithschizophreniawouldoftensufferfromdyslexia,dyspraxiaor/andADHD/ADDinchildhood.Schizophreniaandbi-polardisorderareoftendescribedastwosidesofonecoin.Wehavecreateddifferentdiagnosticboxestofitourpatientsin.Butamodernpatientdoesnotfitintoanyoneofthemneatly.Themodernpatientinmostcasesfitsintoaratherlumpypictureofoverlappingneurologicalandpsychiatricconditions.

Whenweexaminethesepatientsinaclinicalsetting,wefindthatapartfromso-calledmentalproblems,theyarealsophysicallyveryill.Digestivedisorders,malnourishment,allergies,asthma,eczema,chroniccystitis,thrushandfussyeatinghabitsareaconsistentpartofthepicture.

Whatisatypicalscenarioweseeinclinicalpractice?

Beforeexaminingthepatientitisveryimportanttolookatthehealthhistoryoftheparents.Whenevertheparentsarementionedpeopleimmediatelythinkaboutgenetics.However,apartofgeneticsthereissomethingveryimportanttheparents,motherinparticular,passtotheirchild:

theiruniquegutmicro-flora.Notmanypeopleknowthatanadultonaveragecarries2kgofbacteriainthegut.Therearemorecellsinthatmicrobialmassthantherearecellsinanentirehumanbody.Itisahighlyorganisedmicro-world,wherecertainspeciesofbacteriahavetopredominatetokeepushealthyphysicallyandmentally.Theirroleinourhealthissomonumental,thatwesimplycannotaffordtoignorethem.Wewilltalkindetailaboutthechild’sgutfloralater.Nowletuscomebacktothesourceofthechild’sgutflora–theparents.

Afterstudyinghundredsofcasesorneurologicalandpsychiatricconditionsinchildren,atypicalhealthpictureofthesechildren’smumshasemerged.

Atypicalmodernmotherwasprobablynotbreastfedwhenshewasababy,becauseshewasbornin60sor70swhenbreast-feedingwentoutoffashion.Whyisitimportant?

Becauseitiswellknownthatbottlefedbabiesdevelopcompletelydifferentgutfloratothebreastfedbabies.Thiscompromisedgutflorainabottlefedbabylateronpredisposeshertomanyhealthproblems.Havingacquiredcompromisedgutflorafromthestart,atypicalmodernmumhadquiteafewcoursesofantibioticsinherchildhoodandyouthforvariousinfections.Itisawellknownfactthatantibioticshaveaseriousdamagingeffectonthegutflora,becausetheywipeoutthebeneficialstrainsofbacteriainthegut.Attheageof16andsometimesevenearlierthemodernmumwasputonacontraceptivepill,whichshetookforquiteafewyearsbeforestartingafamily.Contraceptivepillshaveadevastatingeffectonthebeneficial(good)bacteriainthegut.Oneofthemajorfunctionsofthegoodbacteriainthegutfloraiscontrollingabout500differentknowntosciencespeciesofpathogenic(bad)andopportunisticmicrobes.Whenthebeneficialbacteriagetdestroyedtheopportunistsgetaspecialopportunitytogrowintolargecoloniesandoccupylargeareasofthedigestivetract.Amoderndietofprocessedandfastfoodsprovidesperfectnourishmentforthesepathogensandthatisatypicaldietamodernmumhadasachildandayoungadult.Asaresultofallthesefactorsamodernmumhasseriouslycompromisedgutflorabythetimesheisreadytohavechildren.Andindeedclinicalsignsofgutdysbiosis(abnormalgutflora)arepresentinalmost100%ofmothersofchildrenwithneurologicalandpsychiatricconditions.Themostcommonhealthproblemsinmothersaredigestiveabnormalities,allergies,auto-immunity,PMS,chronicfatigue,headachesandskinproblems.

Ababyisbornwithasterilegut.Inthefirst20orsodaysoflifethebaby’svirgingutsurfacegetspopulatedbyamixtureofmicrobes.Thisisthechild’sgutflora,whichwillhaveatremendouseffectonthischild’shealthfortherestofhis/herlife.Wheredoesthisgutfloracomefrom?

Mainlyfromthemother.

So,whatevermicrobialflorathemotherhasshewouldpasstohernew-bornchild.

Gutfloraissomethingwedonotthinkmuchabout.Andyetthenumberoffunctionsthegutflorafulfilsissovitalforusthatifsomedayourdigestivetractgotsterilisedweprobablywouldnotsurvive.

Thefirstandveryimportantfunctionis appropriatedigestionandabsorptionoffood.Ifachilddoesnotacquirenormalbalancedgutflora,thenthechildwillnotdigestandabsorbfoodsproperly,developingmultiplenutritionaldeficiencies.Andthatiswhatwecommonlyseeinchildrenandadultswithlearningdisabilities,psychiatricproblemsandallergies.Manyofthesepatientsaremalnourished.Eveninthecaseswherethechildmaygrowwell,testingrevealssometypicalnutritionaldeficienciesinmanyimportantminerals,vitamins,essentialfats,manyamino-acidsandothernutrients.Themostcommondeficiencies,recordedinthesepatients,areinmagnesium,zinc,selenium,copper,calcium,manganese,sulphur,phosphorus,iron,potassium,vanadium,boron,vitaminsB1,B2,B3,B6,B12,C,A,D,folicacid,pantothenicacid,omega-3,6,9fattyacids,taurine,alpha-ketoglutaricacid,glutathioneandmanyotheramino-acids.Thisusuallistofnutritionaldeficienciesincludessomemostimportantnutrientsfornormaldevelopmentandfunctionofthechild’sbrain,immunesystemandtherestofthebody.

Apartofnormaldigestionandabsorptionoffoodhealthy gutfloraactivelysynthesisesvariousnutrients:

vitaminK,pantothenicacid,folicacid,thiamine(vitaminB1),riboflavin(vitaminB2),niacin(vitaminB3),pyridoxine(vitaminB6),ciancobalamine(vitaminB12),variousamino-acidsandproteins.Indeed,whentestedpeoplewithgutdysbiosisalwayspresentwithdeficienciesofthesenutrients.Clinicalexperienceshowsthatrestoringthebeneficialbacteriaintheirgutisthebestwaytodealwiththesedeficiencies.

Themajorityofchildrenandadultswithneurologicalandpsychiatricconditionslookpaleandpasty.Whentestedtheyshowvariousstagesofanaemia,whichisnotsurprising.Tohaveahealthybloodwerequiremanydifferentnutrients:

vitamins(B1,B2,B3,B6,B12,K,A,D,etc),minerals(Fe,Ca,Mg,Zn,Co,Se,boron,etc.),essentialamino-acidsandfats.Thesepatientsnotonlycannotabsorbthesenutrientsfromfood,buttheirownproductionofmanyoftheminthebodyisdamaged.Ontopofthatpeoplewithdamagedgutfloraoftenhaveparticulargroupsofpathogenicbacteriagrowingintheirgut,whichareiron-lovingbacteria(Actinomycesspp.,Mycobacteriumspp.,pathogenicstrainsofE.Coli,Corynebacteriumspp.andmanyothers).Theyconsumewhateverironthepersongetsfromthediet,leavingthatpersondeficientiniron.Unfortunately,supplementingirononlymakesthesebacteriagrowstrongeranddoesnotremedyanaemia.Totreatanaemiathepersonrequiresallthenutrientswehavementioned,manyofwhichhealthygutflorasupplies.

Apartfromtakingadirectpartinnourishingthebody,beneficialbacteriainthegutactas thehousekeepersforthedigestivetract.Theycoattheentiresurfaceofthegutprotectingitfrominvadersandtoxinsbyprovidinganaturalbarrierandproducingalotofanti-bacterial,anti-viralandanti-fungalsubstances.Atthesametimetheyprovidethegutliningwithnourishment.Itisestimatedthat60–70%ofenergy,thegutliningderives,isfromtheactivityofbacteria,whichliveonit.So,itisnosurprisethatwhenthegutfloraisabnormalthedigestivetractitselfcannotbehealthy.Indeedmostchildrenandadultswithlearningdisabilities,psych
