TheflagofthePeople’sRepublicofChinaisredincolorandithasfiveyellowstars.ThecolorredsymbolizesthespiritoftherevolutionandthefivestarssignifytheunityofthepeopleofChinaundertheleadershipoftheChineseCommunistParty.TheflagfirstwentupinTiananmenSquareonOctober1,1949,upontheformalproclamationthatthePeople’sRepublicofChinawasfounded.
ThedesignofthenationalemblemofthePeople’sRepublicofChinapublishedbytheCentralPeople’sGovernmentonSeptember20,1950,showsTiananmenunderthelightoffivestarsanditisframedwithearsofgrainandacogwheel.TiananmenisthesymbolofmodernChinabecausetheMay4thMovementof1919,whichmarksthebeginningofthenewdemocraticrevolutioninChina,waslaunchedthere.ItisalsotheplacewheretheinaugurationofthePeople’sRepublicofChinawasheld.Thecogwheelandtheearsofgrainrepresenttheworkingclassandthepeasantryrespectively,andthefivestarssymbolizethesolidarityofthevariousnationalitiesofChina.TheemblemclearlyindicatesthatthePeople’sRepublicofChinaisasocialiststateledbytheworkingclassandbasedontheallianceoftheworkersandthepeasants.
TianHanwrotethewordsforthenationalanthem,andNieErsetthemusicin1935.OriginallyknownastheMarchoftheVolunteers,itwasthethemesongofTheSonsandDaughtersinTimesofTurmoil,afilmthatdepictshowChineseintellectualsmarchedbravelytothefrontintheWarofResistanceAgainstJapan.DuringtheSecondWorldWarthepeopleofothercountrieswhosympathizedwiththeChinesepeopleintheiranti-Japanesestrugglesalsosangit.In1949itwasmadethenationalanthemofthePeople’sRepublicofChina.
