Ragtimebecamepopularintheearly1890s,andthemusicwasplayedonthepiano.Thepianoplayerusuallymadeupamelody,andthenchangeditalittlebiteverytimeheplayed.ScottJoplinwasverygoodatcomposing,ormakingupmusicandplayingthepiano.Whenhewasgrowingup,Joplin’shomewasfilledwithmusic.Still,Joplin’sfatherdidnotwanthimtobeamusician.Whenhewasabout14yearsold,Joplinlefthometotravelandstartalifeofhisown.HetraveledallovertheMid-westplayingthepianoandcomposingmusic.Sometimesheplayedwithmusicgroups.Othertimeshesangbyhimselfinnoisysaloonsandbars.In1899,JoplinwroteMapleLeafRag,aragtimesongthatbecameabighitandearnedJoplinthetitleofTheKingofRagtime.Inall,hewrotemorethan500songs.Joplin’sbiggestdreamwastocomposearagtimeopera.Finally,after10years,JoplincompletedaragtimeoperawhichhecalledTreemonisha.Thisoperawasaboutayoungblackwomanwhobecameleaderofherpeople.Shetriedtohelpherpeoplegaintheirfreedomandtheirrights.

In1916,Joplinbecameverysick.Hehadadiseasethatmadehimforgetthingsandbecomeeasilyafraidofthings.In1917,hewasputinhospital.HefinallydiedthereonApril1,1917.ScottJoplin’smusicbecamepopularagainintheearly1970swhenitwasusedinamoviecalledTheSting.
