Morethan25yearsago,MuhammadYunuswasteachingeconomicsatauniversityinBangladeshwhenhemetawomanmakingbamboostoolsfortwoU.S.penniesaday.Sheexplainedthatbecauseshedidn’thavethemoneytobuythebambootomakethestools,shehadtoborrowfromatraderwhoimposedtheconditionthatshehadtoselltheproducttohimalone,atapricethathedecided.

Yunusmadealistof42similarworkersaroundthevillagewhocoulduseverysmallloanstoimprovetheirlives.Thetotalneededbyallthosepeoplewas$27.Afterloaningthemthemoney,hewaspaidbackeverypenny.

GrameenBank

Aftermakingmanymoreloansandprovingthatpoorpeoplewouldpaybackeverycent,Yunusstruggledunsuccessfullytofindalocalbankthatwouldlendsmallamountsofmoneytothepoorpeopleinnearbyvillages.Hethenspenttwoyearssettingupaformal,independentbanktodojustthat.OnOct.2,1983,GrameenBankwascreated.

GrameenBanknowworksinmorethan46,000villagesinBangladesh,has1,267branchesandmorethan12,000staffmembers,andhaslentmorethan$4.5billion,inloansof$12to$15.Ahousingloanis$300.Attheheartofthisempowermentareindividualswhochosetobecomeself-reliant,independententrepreneursproducinggoodsoutoftheirownhomesorneighborhoodstobecomeeconomicallyviableandsuccessful.Theyfoundtheirvoices.

Mostpeopleinorganizationstodayareneitherfulfillednorexcited.They’refrustratedanduninvolvedintheirorganization’sgoals.That’swhyourhigh-pressure,24/7erarequiresmorethaneffectiveness(the“7Habits”).Toachievegreatness,weneedan“8thHabit”:

TheProblem

OurbasicmanagementpracticescomefromtheIndustrialAge.Theseinclude:

●Thebeliefthatyoumustcontrolpeople;

●Ourviewofaccounting(Peopleareanexpense;machinesareassets.);

●Thecarrot-and-stickmotivationalphilosophy;and

●Centralizedbudgeting,whichcreateshierarchiesandbureaucraciestodrive“gettingthenumbers”—areactiveprocessthatproduces“kiss-up”culturesbenton“spendingsowewon’tloseitnextyear.”Aspeopleconsenttobecontrolledlikethings,theirpassivityonlyfuelsleaders’urgetodirectandmanage.

There’sasimpleconnectionbetweenthecontrolling,IndustrialAge,“thing”paradigmthatdominatestoday’sworkplaceandtheinabilityofmanagersandorganizationstoinspirepeople’sbestcontributionsintheKnowledgeWorkerAge:
