Abstract

Idiomisanelementofalanguagethatpossessesauniquewayofexpressionbasedonitstime-honoreduse.Asalanguageusedmostwidelyintheworld,Englishisoneofthelanguageshavingmostprolificexpressivemeansandabrilliantculturaltradition,andEnglishidiomsarethelinguisticgemsofEnglishlanguage.WithregardtotheimportanceofidiominEnglish,scholarsstudytheidiomsfromdifferentperspectives,namelyfocusingonitspatterns,semantics,syntacticfeaturesandthementalprocessingandcomprehensionofidiom.However,thesestudiesattachsomuchimportancetothestructuresandthepropertiesofidiomitselfthattheyneglectthefunctionsofEnglishidiomintext.

BasedonHalliday’smetafunctiontheoryandtheauthenticdatacollectedfromEnglisheconomicnewstexts,thispaperattemptstostudytheuseofEnglishidiomintext.Bymeansofstatisticalclassification,exemplificationandanalysisoflargequalitiesofexamples,itisfoundthatidiomhasimportanttextual,ideationalandinterpersonalfunctions.TheapplicationofidiomintheEnglisheconomicnewstextsisnotentirelyoptional.First,someEnglishidiomsaremetaphoricalinnature,theuseofidiomsthathaveconnectionwiththecontextintheliteralmeaningandalsosuitsthecontentsofthetextisawaytoexpressnewconceptsorcertainunfamiliarevents，whichisitsideationalfunction;Inaddition,theinterpersonalfunctionisachievedbythepopularityandfamiliarityofidiomaticexpressions,whichmakesthedullanddryeconomicarticlesmorereadableandfascinating,facilitatingthetwo-wayinteractionbetweenspeakersandlistenersorwritersandreaders.Thetextualfunction,oftenappearingintheimportantpartofatext,helpstoorganizetextstructureandforetellthefollowingtextaswellasplayaroleascohesivetiesinlinkingtocontextinsenseofsemantics.

TheauthordemonstratesthatEnglishlearnersshouldpaymoreattentiontothestudyofEnglishidiomandbeawareofthefunctionsintext.Throughanalyzingthefunctionsofidiom,thispapernotonlycanhelpinunderstandingidiomsmoredeeplybutalsocanfacilitatethecomprehensionandtranslationofEnglisheconomictexts.

摘要

习语是在某一种语言体系中由于长期习惯性使用形成的、具有独特表达方式的语言元素。

英语作为世界上使用最广泛的语言之一，具有丰富多彩的表达方式和浓郁的文化特色，而英语习语则被认为是英语语言的精华。

由于英语习语的重要性，很多国内外的学者从不同角度对习语进行了研究，主要关注习语的类型、句法特征和语义等问题，然而，这些研究过于注重研究英语习语个体本身的属性和特征，而忽略了英语习语在语篇中的功能。

本文以韩礼德系统功能学的一个重要概念——纯理功能为理据，以英语经济类报刊杂志文章为语料来探讨分析英语习语在经济类语篇中的功能，通过收集大量的例证，然后归类，分析得出结论，英语习语在语篇中有三大重要的功能：

概念功能、人际功能、语篇功能。

英语习语在语篇中的使用并不是随意的，很多习语本身是具有比喻性，既在字面语义上衔接了上下文又适合语篇内容，这些习语的运用是表达某种新事物或抽象概念的一种有效途径；其次，英语习语的使用使得本来相对枯燥无味、晦涩难懂的经济现象变得平易近人，生动活泼，极具情趣，从而加强了读者与作者对信息的双向交流；另外，语篇中的习语经常出现在文章的重要位置，具有组织语篇结构、连接信息和预示上下文以及作为衔接链照应上下文等作用。

笔者认为英语学习者应重视英语习语的学习和积累，并了解其在语篇中的作用；对其在语篇中的功能进行分析探讨，一方面有利于加强对英语习语的理解和学习，另一方对英语经济类报刊文章的阅读理解和翻译都大有裨益。

1.Introduction

1.1Thepurposeofthisstudy

Inthehighlydevelopedmodernsociety,economyisanindispensablepartofourlife.Economicarticlesarereadbyeconomistsandspecialistsaswellasbylaypeople.However,itseemsdifficultfortheordinarypeopletograbtheauthor’sviewpointsintheeconomicarticlesataquickglanceofthetexts,partlybecauseoftheabstractfeaturesofeconomiceventsandpartlyduetotheirlackingsomeprofessionalknowledgeofeconomicactivities.

Nevertheless,someidiomaticexpressionsusedinsomeparticularplacesofthetextcanbeagoodguidanceforourcomprehensionofthearticle.Forexample,theidiomaticexpressionssuchas,“it’sjustapartofthestory”areverycommoninthetexttoindicatethatthereismoresignificantreasonbehindthesuperficies.Besides,inordertoaddvividnessandattractivenesstothedulleconomicnewstexts,thewritersusuallyapplyEnglishidiomstodothetrickineconomictexts.Forexample,thewriterwilldescribeafastgrowingeconomyas“theeconomyisgrowingbyleapsandbounds.”Theuseofidiomsintheeconomictextswillalsoachieveinterpersonalfunction,establishingsomekindrapportwithreaders,facilitatingtheirinterpretationoftheeconomictextsbymappingthefamiliarandreceivedconcept（idioms,idiomaticexpressions）intotheunfamiliarandabstractnotion（economicactivitiesandtexts）.

WhenreadingEnglisheconomicnewspapersandmagazines,theauthorisattractedbytheheavily-usedidioms.BasedontheauthenticdatacollectedfromtheEnglishnewspapersandmagazines,thepresentstudyisdoneinanattempttoprobethemulti-functionsofidiomaticphrasesinEnglishEconomictexts.TheresultofthisstudyshouldbemeaningfulforhelpingEnglishlearnerstopaymoreattentiontothestudyofEnglishidiomsandeventuallypolishourskillsinusingEnglishlanguage.

1.2Theapproachtothispaper

Atthebeginningoftheresearch,themajortaskistocollectdata.About20examplesofEnglishidiomineconomictextsareselectedfromEnglishbusinessnewspapers,magazinesandwebsites.Qualitativeapproachandexampleanalysisareemployedintheprocedureofthecasestudy.Qualitativeapproachisadoptedtoshowmulti-functionsofidiomaticphrasesinEnglishEconomictexts.

2.Therationale:

Halliday’stheoryofmetafunctions

Inthefieldofsystemicfunctionalgrammar（SFG）,Halliday'sviewonlanguagefunctionispopularlyacceptedbymostoffunctionalgrammarians,andisregardedastheauthorityintheschoolofSFG.Heinterpretslanguagedevelopmentfromafunctionalperspectiveandformulatesthefunctionallinguistics,inwhichthefundamentaltheoryisthefunctionalgrammar,whichattemptstoexplainlinguisticstructureandlinguisticphenomena,byreferencetothenotionthat“languageplaysacertainpartinourlives,thatisrequiredtoservecertainuniversaltypesofdemand”（Halliday,1998:

5）.Basedonthisnotion,hemaintainsthateverylanguagehasthreemajorfunctions:

theideationalfunction,theinterpersonalfunctionandthetextualfunction,togethertermedasthreemetafunctions,whicharethebasictheoryforanalyzingthetopicinthispaper.

Englishidiom,asthelinguisticgem,alsopossessesthesethreemetafunctions.AnditisbasedonthesethreemetafunctionsthatC.FernandodividesEnglishidiomintothreetypes,ideationalidioms,interpersonalidiomsandtextualidioms.AndthiscategorizationofEnglishidiomhavecloseconnectionwithHalliday’stheoryofmetafunction,moreexactly,theyrespectivelyreflectthethreemetafunctionbydifferentmeansinthetexts.Thefollowing-upwillbegivenmoredetailedexplanationoftherelationbetweenthethreekindsofEnglishidiomandthemetafunctions.
