在弗雷德看来,面试进行得很顺利。
五天前他曾向一家小公司申请工作,现在那公司的一名董事正在对他进行面试。
在这之前弗雷德一直在当推销员。
他现在想调工作并不是因为缺钱,而是因为作为一名推销员他几乎没有空闲的时间。
弗雷德在谈话前很担心,生怕头脑发昏说错话,但是很幸运他发现自己同这位董事的共同之处颇多。
显然这位董事很满意。
正当弗雷德在想着自己很可能得到工作时,董事接着问他:

Fredhadbeenworriedthathemightlosehisheadandsaysomethingsilly,butfortunatelyhefoundthathehadalotincommonwiththedirector.
Itwasclearthatthedirectorwasquitesatisfied.Fredwasthinkingthathischancesoflandingthejobwerefavourablewhenthedirectorproceededtoask,“Doyoumindworkingovertime?
”

汤姆一开始同父亲谈话就想直截了当地把自己的意思说出来。

我几次同我妻子谈,劝她把所有不再需要的东西扔掉,但她不同意,并自信地争辩说这些东西值好大一笔钱呢!
现在我们屋子里的垃圾多得简直只能全家搬出去,以便留出更多的地方去堆垃圾。

Nowthereissomuchjunkinourhousethatperhapsthefamilyhadbettermoveoutsoastomakeroomformorejunk.

最使我满意的一次交谈是十年前在巴黎同一位年轻的荷兰人的交谈。
不记得我们究竟谈了些什么,只记得我不懂荷兰语,他不懂汉语。
很幸运,我们都能讲一些法语。
我设法同他说法语,但忽然我发现自己在找一个等同于“大约”的法语词。
我怎么也想不起那个词了。
可是我却记起了相应的德语词,我用了“Ungefahr”这个词。
他懂得我的意思。
接着我们就用法语和德语混杂着交谈。
后来发现我们还都能说几句西班牙语。
在整个交谈中我们毫不费力地用西班牙语、法语和德语将各自要表达的意思讲给对方听。
当然要把西班牙语、法语和德语混在一起作为一种官方语言是不允许的,但我听说有许多人说一种“混杂欧洲语(pidginEuropean)”。

AmixtureofSpanish,FrenchandGermanis,ofcourse,notacceptableasanofficiallanguage;butIhaveheardofmanypeoplespeakingsomekindof“pidginEuropean”anyway.

手机当然对我们的生活产生了重要影响,但这种影响应该向好的方向发展。

买东西是一项重要的人类活动。

人们花钱的方式,花钱买的东西能反映出个人的兴趣爱好(personaltaste)。
