Inmodemsocietythereisagreatdealofargumentaboutcompetition.Somevalueithighly,believingthatitisresponsibleforsocialprogressandprosperity.Otherssaythatcompetitionisbad,thatitsetsonepersonagainstanotherandthatitleadstounfriendlyrelationshipbetweenpeople.

Ihavetaughtmanychildrenwhoheldthebeliefthattheirself-worthrelied(依赖)onhowwelltheyperformedattennisandotherskills.Forthem,playingwellandwinningareoftenlife-and-deathaffair.Intheirsingle-mindedpursuit(追求)ofsuccess,thedevelopmentofmanyotherhumanqualitiesissadlyforgotten.

However,whilesomeseemtobelostinthedesiretosucceed,otherstakeanoppositeattitude.Inaculturewhichvaluesonlythewinnerandpaysnoattentiontotheordinaryplayers,theystronglyblamecompetition.Amongthemostvocalareyoungsterswhohavesufferedundercompetitivepressuresfromtheirparentsorsociety.Teachingtheseyoungpeople,Ioftenobserveinthemadesiretofail.Theyseemtoseekfailurebynottryingtowinorachievesuccess.Bynottrying,theyalwayshaveanexcuse:

“Imayhavelost,butitdoesn’tmatterbecauseIreallydidn’ttry.’’Whatisnotusuallyadmittedbythemselvesisthebeliefthatiftheyhadreallytriedandlost,thatwouldmeanalot.Suchalosswouldbeameasureoftheirworth.
