TodayalmosteverycountryintheworldisamemberoftheUN.Eachcountryhassignedanagreementthatsays:

1.Allmembersareequal.

2.Allmemberspromisetosolveinternationalproblemsinapeacefulway.

3.Nomemberwilluseforceagainstanothermember.

4.AllmemberswillhelptheUNinitsactions.

5.TheUNwillnottrytosolveproblemswithincountriesexcepttoenforceinternationalpeace.

Obviously,theUnitedNationshasnotbeencompletelysuccessfulinitsgoals.Therehavebeenseveralwarssince1945.However,theorganizationhashelpedbringpeacetosomecountriesthatwereatwar.Ithashelpedpeoplewholefttheircountriesbecauseofwars.Ithashelpedbringindependencetocolonies.

ThemainUnitedNationsorganizationisinNewYorkCity,buttheUNhasa“family”ofotherrelatedorganizatallovertheworld.Theseorganizationstrytoprovideabetterlifeforeveryone.OneexampleisUNICEF,anorganizationthatprovidesfood,medicalcare,andmanyotherservicesforpoorchildrenwherevertheylive.Another

exampleistheWorldHealthOrganization,whichdevelopsmedicalprogramsallovertheworld.

TherearethousandsofUNworkersindevelopingcountries.Theyworkasplannerstoincreaseproductioninfarmingandindustry.Theyprovidemedicalservices,improveeducationprograms,andspreadscientificinformation.

Theydevelopprogramsthatprovidejobsandbetterlivingconditions.Theyhelpcountriescontroltheirpopulationgrowth.

TheUnitedNationsalsoholdslargeinternationalconferences,wherepeoplemeettodiscussimportantworldissues.

Oneconferencewasabouttheusesandownershipofoceans.Anotherwasaboutwomen.TherearealsoInternationalYears.Inthesespecialyears,peopleworktogethertoimprovesituationsandsolveproblems.OneyearwastheInternationalYearoftheChild.

Forcenturiescountrieshavefoughteachother,andpowerfulcountrieshavetakencontrolofweakerones.Itisverydifficulttopersuadenationstolivetogetherinpeace.Nevertheless,theUnitedNationsisattemptingtodothis.Itistheonlyorganizationthatunitestheworldinthesearchforpeace.
