AlfredNobelhadbroadculturalinterests.Theinterestthathedevelopedinliteratureduringhisearlyyouthlastedthroughouthislife.Hislibraryholdsarichspectrumofliteratureindifferentlanguages.FurtherevidenceofNobel’sliteraryinterestwasthatduringthelastyearsofhislife,hebeganwritingfictionagain.LiteraturewasthefourthprizeareaNobelmentionedinhiswill.

TheveryfirstNobelPrizeinLiteraturewasawardedin1901totheFrenchpoetandphilosopherSullyPrudhomme,whoinhispoetryshowedthe"rarecombinationofthequalitiesofbothheartandintellect".Overtheyears,theNobelPrizeinLiteraturehasdistinguishedtheworksofauthorsfrommanydifferentlanguagesandculturalbackgrounds.TheLiteraturePrizehasbeenawardedtounknownmastersaswellasauthorsacclaimedworldwide.

TheNobelPrizeinLiteratureisawardedbytheSwedishAcademy.
