FindinghimselfunwelcomeinNewYork,FreedfledtotheWestCoast,wherehemanagedtolandadaytimediscjockey(流行音乐播音员)jobatKDAYinLosAngelesin1960.Legalproblemscontinuedtobotherhim,though,andhewaschargedwithtakingbribesofmorethan$30,000fromanumberofrecordcompanies.Publicly,Freeddeniedthathehadeveraccepteddirectbribes,althoughheacknowledgedthathehadacceptedgiftsfromrecordcompanies,butonlyforplayingrecordsthathewascertainwouldbecomehitsanyway.AfterashorttimeatKDAY,heleftwhenthestationmanagementrefusedtolethimpromotehisliverock‘n’rollshows.HereturnedtoNewYork,butnotasabroadcaster.Attheheightofthegreatenthusiasmforthetwistdance,hehostedaManhattantwistrevue(时事讽刺剧),butwhenthisenthusiasmcooled,hefoundadiscjockeyjobatWQAMinMiamiin1962.Duringthisdifficultperiod,FreedbegandrinkingheavilyandlosthisjobinMiamiafteronlytwomonths.InDecemberof1962hewasfoundguiltyinNewYorkoftwochargesofcommercialbriberyandwasgivenasix-monthsentenceandfined$300.Thiseffectivelyendedhiscareer.

FreedspentthelastyearsofhislifeinPalmSprings,California.Althoughhehadredefinedwhatitmeanttobeadiscjockeyandnamedthemusicthathadbecomeananthem(圣歌)fortheworld’syouth,hewasadisgraced(耻辱的)andbrokenman,nolongerabletoworkinthebusinessheloved.OnJanuary20,1965,hediedinahospitalinPalmSprings.
