OnthewaywemetMrs.Patrick,laughingguiltilyasifsheweredoingsomethingwrong,togetherwithhergirls.

   Thereneverwassuchadayforflyingkites!

Weplayedallourfreshstringintotheboys'kitesandtheywentuphigherandhigher.Wecouldhardlydistinguishtheorangecoloredspotsofthekites.Nowandthenweslowlypulledonekiteback,watchingitdancingupanddowninthewind,andfinallybringingitdowntoearth,justforthejoyofsendingitupagain.

   Evenourfathersdroppedtheirtoolsandjoinedus.Ourmotherstooktheirturn,laughinglikeschoolgirls.Ithinkwe_were_all_beside_ourselves.Parentsforgottheirdutyandtheirdignity;childrenforgottheireverydayfightsandlittlejealousies.   “Perhapsit'slikethisinthekingdomofheaven,”Ithoughtconfusedly.

   Itwasgrowingdarkbeforeweallwalkedsleepilybacktothehouses.Isupposewehadsomesortofsupper.Isupposetheremusthavebeenasurfacetidyingup,forthehouseonSundaylookedcleanandorderlyenough.Thestrangethingwas,wedidn'tmentionthatdayafterward.Ifeltalittleembarrassed.SurelynoneoftheothershadbeenasexcitedasI.Ilockedthememoryupinthatdeepestpartofmewherewekeep“thethingsthatcannotbeandyettheyare.”

Teammembersmustbeabletoexpresstheiropinionsfreelywithoutfearofbeingcriticized,andtheymusthavethefeelingthattheirsuggestionswillbetakenseriously.Thisisanimportantpointbecausetheteammayneedtoresolvesomecomplexorthornyissues.Forexample,itmaydiscussasensitivetopic.Shouldtheykeeptheirconclusionwithintheteamorshareitwithotheremployees?

Disagreementsarenaturaland,infact,debateanddiscussionshouldbeencouraged.Ateammadeuponlyof“yesmen”canmakedisastrousdecisionsthatfewpeoplehonestlyagreedwithinthefirstplace.Consequently,thereshouldberulesonhowlengthydisagreementsshouldbehandled.Forexample,teammeetingsmaynotbethemostappropriateplaceforadiscussionthatinvolvesonlytwopeople,so“underthetable”methodmaybeeffective.

Mosthighperformingteamsarewellorganized.Agoodorganizershouldbeabletoplaytoindividuals'strengthsandhelpthemovercometheirweaknesses.Itshouldbesomeonewhocanact asapromoterandaconstantreminderofwhattheteamneedstoachieve.Hemust,aboveall,beskilledinsharingresponsibilityandsettingtaskstoothers,coachingthemtoachievetasks,andprovidingconstructivefeedbackonhowthetaskswent.

Teambuildingisn'tassimpleasjustthrowingafewpeopletogether.Itrequiresmuchmore,butmotivatingpeopleismostessential.Successfulteamworkingisnotmarkedbyhowmuchprogresstheteammakestowarditsgoals,butbyhowconfidentlyeachofitsmemberscompleteshisorherassignedtaskswithasenseofachievementandpride.
