Myprejudiceagainstadolescents'sometimesdemonicenergyisnotentirelybaseless.AlltheteenagersIknowdodemandtobetreatedlikeadultswhileinsistingontheprerogativesofachild.Theylayclaimtorightswhileoftenevadingresponsibilities.Andtheytreattheirparentswiththekindofcontemptthatwe,theadults,canonlyregardwithdisbelief(andsneakingenvy?

)sincewe,rearedinmoredeferentialtimes,couldneverhavegotawaywithit.

OnethingthathashelpedmethroughtheseturbulentyearsisthecommentoftheBritishpsychoanalystDonaldWinnicottthat"theadolescentboyorgirl...[does]notwanttobeunderstood.Adultsmusthideamongthemselveswhattheycometounderstandofadolescence."Thebesthidingplace,Ihavefound,isotherparents.Justasteenagersmeettogetherincovens,sodoweparentsgatherincabals.Onemotherconvulsedme,thelasttimewegottogether,withherdescriptionofhowshegotsoangrywithhersonthatshewentfromzerochastisementtonuclearthreatin10seconds.Themomentthatthepunitivepenaltystartedtoleaveherlipssherealiseditwasexcessivebut-ashumans,fatally,lackarewindbutton-shecouldseenowayofhaulingthewordsbackin:
