BorninCubain1915,CarmenHerreralivedinNewYorkandParisandeventuallysettledinNewYorkwhereshelivedtillnow.Throughtheyears,sheworkedquietlyandcreatedahugequantityofpaintings.WhilelivinginNewYorkinthe1950s,shemadereductive,hard-edgedabstractionsthatpredate（早于）theworksofartistssuchasLygiaClarkinBrazilandEllsworthKellyintheUS.HerworksalsoprovedherforesightasMinimalismandOpArttookholdinthe1960s,andwithlaterdevelopmentsintheworksofAmericanpainterssuchasBriceMardenAgnesMartin,bothofwhomarerepresentedinthecollection.
