GraduateworkattheUniversityofChicagofoundhimconnectedwithhonorableeducatorsCharlesJuddandW.W.Charters,whoseideasofteachingandtestinghadaneffectonhislaterwork.In1927,hebecameateacherofOhioStateUniversitywherehefurtherdevelopedanewmethodoftesting.

Tylerbecamewell-knownnationallyin1938,whenhecarriedhisworkwiththeEight-YearStudyfromOhioStateUniversitytotheUniversityofChicagoattheinvitationofRobertHutchins.

TylerwasthefirstdirectoroftheCenterforAdvancedStudyintheBehavioralSciencesatStanford,apositionheheldforfourteenyears.There,hefirmlybelievedthatresearchersshouldbefreetoseekanindependent(独立的)spiritintheirwork.
