WithourBestHighSchoolslist,wethinkkidsatthoseschoolshaveanedge,nomatterwhattheireconomicbackgroundare.Butmanyschoolsnotonourlistarealsochallengingstudentsininnovativeways—proofthatthenationalexperimentinhigh-schooleducationisjustbeginning.Askyourself,“Whatishighschoolreallyfor?

”Thenlookaroundattheoptionsavailabletotoday’steenagers:

Diverseandcompellinganswersabound.Herearesomeofthem.

Everyonepaysforpublicschools,soitmakessensethataprimarymissionshouldbeteachingstudentstoparticipateinthedemocraticprocess.Agenerationagomanyschoolsrequiredcivics(公民学)courses;farfewerdosotoday.“Thereissomuchemphasisonpreparingkidstosurviveeconomically,”saysConstanciaWarren,seniorprogramofficeranddirectorofurban-high-schoolinitiativesfortheCarnegieCorp.ofNewYork.“Asaresult,arewereallypreparingkidsforcitizenship?

Inthepastdecade,manyschoolshavestartedrequiringcommunityservice.TheCaesarChavezHighSchoolforPublicPolicypushesthatideaallthewaytoCapitolHill,which,fortunately,iswithinwalkingdistance.Inadditiontoarigorouscollege-prepcurriculum,studentsworkasinternsinCongress,atthinktanksandadvocacygroupsinWashington.Asseniors,theywriteathesisonapublic-policyissueandgiveapresentationbeforeanaudiencethatforcesthemtodefendtheirstand.

Chaveznowhas500students,themajorityfromlow-incomefamilies.They’rebuddingactivistslike17-year-oldEuseviaValdez,whohadnoideawhatpublicpolicywaswhensheenrolledinthecharterschoolasafreshman.Fouryearslater,shenotonlyunderstandspublicpolicy,shelivesit.Shewroteherseniorthesisonflawsinimmigrationlaws,somethingsheunderstandsfrompersonalexperience.Herparentsarelegalimmigrantsandshewasbornhere,butthefamilyhasstruggledtobringheroldersistersandbrotherstotheUnitedStatesfromtheirnativeElSalvador.Heroldestsisterwas21beforethepaperworkwasapprovedand,asaresult,hasbeenrefusedpermissiontoimmigrate.HeryearsatChavez,shesays,“taughtmetofightforwhatIbelievein.”

Practicalconcerns—likehelpingkidsfigureoutacareerpath—werenotonthemindsofthefoundersofTempePreparatoryAcademyinArizonaadecadeago.Instead,theycreatedacharterschoolwhosegoalistoturnoutstudentsengagedin“thelifelongpursuitoftruth,goodnessandbeauty,”accordingtotheschoolhandbook.For330studentsingrades7to12,thatmeansprovidingastrongfoundationinthearts,scienceandthehumanities.ThecurriculumisbasedontheGreatBooksconcept—thebasisofWesternCivilization,startingwiththeGreeks.“Wedon’twantkidstospecialize,”saysDanielScoggin,CEOofGreatHeartsPreparatoryAcademies,theorganizationbehindTempeandtwoothersimilarschoo
