美国在本次战争中失败（虽然美国政府自称是“光荣的撤退”）。

越战是冷战中的“一次热战”，希望统一越南的南方反政府军“民族解放阵线”在北越领导人胡志明的支持下，反对南越吴庭艳政府。

美国则出兵帮助南越。

最开始扶植南越的美国总统是DwightdDavidEisenhower（德怀特·戴维·艾森豪威尔）；JohnFitzgeraldKennedy（约翰·菲茨杰拉德·肯尼迪）开始支持在越南作战；林登·约翰逊将战争扩大。

在RichardMilhousNixon（理查德·米尔豪斯·尼克松）执政时期，美国因国内的反战浪潮，逐步将军队撤出越南。

北越军和南越共军最终打败了南越政府军队，统一了越南全境。
