TheresearcherstookphotosofthecaterpillarsinsuburbangreenspacesaroundBristol.Andtheyusedavisualmodelingprogramtogivethema“bird’s-eyeview”ofwhatthecaterpillarslooklike,eitherclose-uporfromfartheraway.Whattheyfoundisthatalthoughatcloserangethecaterpillar’sstripesarehighlyobvious—thesebrightcolorsdistinguishitquiteeasilyfromitsbackground—butwhenviewedfromadistancetheymixtogethertoformacolorwhichisactuallyquitedifficulttotellfromthebackgroundcolor.So,thecaterpillarisgettingthebestofbothworlds.Closeup,thestripesmaykeepyourdistance.Butfromadistance,theyallowthecaterpillarstohideinplainsight.
