JosephineCochrane’sfriendswereimpressedwiththemachineandaskedhertobuildmore.Afterthat,wordgotoutfast.Soonhotelandrestaurantownerswhodidn’tlikebrokendishesalsowereinterested.Cochranethenknewthatshehadawonderfulmachine,Soshereceivedapatentfromthegovernment,whichsaidthatonlytheinventorcanmakemoneyfromaninvention.Thenin1893Chicagoheldaworld’sFairwhereinventionsfromallovertheworldwereshown.Cochrane’slabor-savingmachinewasabighit.Herdishwasherwonthehighestaward.

Cochrane’scompanycameoutwithasmallermachinein1914.Itwassupposedtobefortheordinaryhome,butitwasn’tanimmediatesuccess.Manyhomescouldn’tproducetheextremelyhotwateritneeded.Also,inmosthomes,dishwashingwasn’tconsideredverydifficultcomparedtomostotherhousework.Infactsomepeoplelikedtorelaxatthesinkafterahardday!

Hewisheshecouldsee“magnificentstructures”attheirpeak,suchastheElginNationalWatchCompany.OneofhisdreamprojectsistodocumentformerElginNationalWatchCompanyworkersandwhatitwaslikelivingandworkinginElgininthe1950s,hesaid.HealsowroteabouthowhehopeshecouldseeElginHighSchoolintheolddays,when“studentscrowdedthefrontstepsmadeofoldbrick”.
