ManypeoplehavetriedtosimplifythespellingofEnglishword.Unlikeotherlanguages,Englishspellsthesamesoundsinverydifferentways.Forexample,thereis‘light’but‘white’,‘loan’but‘phone’,andthereareatleastsevendifferentwaysofpronouncingthesound‘ough’!

TheytooktheideatoPresidentRooseveltwhothoughtitwasaverygoodone.Heimmediatelytoldthegovernmentprintertousethesimplifiedspellingonallgovernmentletters.
Butpeopledonotlikechange–evenchangethatmakeslifeeasier–andmanypeopledislikedthenew,simplerspelling.TheBritish–whoprobablythoughttheyownedtheEnglishlanguage–wereparticularlyangry.
